In the words of a CATNIP Foundation rescuer:
“Our team received a call for assistance with cats abandoned at a flooded home in Vidor, Texas, one of the areas that was hit the hardest by Hurricane Harvey. It was described as a breeder/hoarding situation with a large number of cats and kittens at risk. Another rescue team had already been to the home and successfully rescued multiple dogs, birds, and other reptiles, but were unable to trap the cats.
Our team arrived at the property to find multiple cats hiding among debris, inside and out. These poor animals had been left starving in their own filth for 12 days after Hurricane Harvey made landfall. We secured all the cats we could locate outside and continued to check the inside of the home. We started a room by room search through mounds of trash along with destroyed and displaced contents.
As I entered a bedroom, I carefully scanned for signs of other felines among the heaps of trash and clothing, dishes, and debris that was scattered around. Instead, I spotted a dog huddled in a ball on the bed.
I called out to Kristen that I had found a puppy, who asked if the pup was alive, and thankfully she was! As I cleared the rest of the home for animals, Kristen went to the truck for additional supplies to attempt to rescue the pup.
The pup was a beautiful dachshund. Her medical condition was unknown, but we were concerned, given the length of time she was alone in the house without food and water. She had also managed to successfully hide from previous rescuers. After quietly sitting with the pup for an extended period, Kristen was able to gain her trust and pick her up to carry her to safety.
She was terrified of the outdoors, and her excessively long nails, flea-ridden skin, and hair loss tell a story of neglect and her fear of everything – a lack of socialization. She spent most of the time in the rescue van shaking from fear, but finally gave us a little wag of her tail toward the end!
She was brought back with us, cleaned up, vetted, and named Daisy Jayne in honor of another rescuer who recently lost her beloved dachshund. She went to a loving foster home and was soon adopted into a wonderful new loving home. It has been a joy to see her blossom and come out of her shell!” – CATNIP Foundation
