A treasured Golden Retriever named Spencer has begun the fight against a rare form of splenic cancer. Spencer has been a fixture in his community for years, gathering overwhelming support as he begins this difficult journey.

Spencer the Golden Retriever has been a beloved Beantown pup since he first showed support to the runners of the Boston marathon. Both Spencer and his sister Penny cheer runners on as they pass through Ashland State Park, sporting a flag that says “We Are Boston Strong.”

Not only do Spencer and Penny make an appearance at local events, but they spend much of their time bringing joy to members of their community that need it. Spencer has taken on the role of a therapy dog at a vaccine clinic for children, a college campus with stressed out students, as well as multiple retirement centers.

With being present at multiple marathons over the last decade, Spencer has gathered thousands of dedicated followers that keep up with his adventures. It’s this overwhelming support that has not only pulled Spencer through his previous abdominal tumor diagnosis, but his most recent terminal cancer diagnosis.

Spencer was diagnosed with his second abdominal tumor in early December after he suddenly lost his appetite. His medical history led to an immediate vet visit, where a large abdominal tumor was seen on x-ray.

The tumor originated on Spencer’s spleen, and it was removed with ease during an abdominal surgery. Once a sample of the tumor was sent to a lab for biopsy, it was found to be an aggressive form of cancer.

“We caught it very early, so we’re hoping we have good quality time with him, which is what the vet said we could expect.” – Rich Powers, Spencer’s dad

The vets were able to remove the tumor in its early form, along with the entire spleen for good measure. This form of cancer is terminal, but Spencer’s vet team believes they can offer him quality time with the use of chemotherapy and close monitoring.

“This is not going to be an easy journey for Spencer or us but one worth taking. There are unknowns ahead and we will be watching over him every step of the way. Rest assured we are doing everything we possibly can for this amazing boy. Spencer’s work here is not done.” – Rich Powers, Spencer’s dad

If all goes well with Spencer’s treatments over the next few months, his vet thinks he will be in good shape to attend the next running of the marathon in April 2022. We can’t wait to see Spencer doing what he loves most, as well as enjoying every remaining day as it comes!
