When rescuers first found Selly, she was lying on the side of the road with another dog, clearly in distress. It seemed as though she had been struck by a car and attacked by another animal. Her eyes were severely damaged, bulging from her head, and she needed immediate surgery to have them removed. Despite this rough start, Selly’s life took a turn when Hayley saw her photo shared by the SPCA. The connection was instant, and Hayley knew Selly was meant to be part of her family.

Now a playful and loving dog, Selly has settled into her new life with Hayley. Though blind, Selly navigates her surroundings with ease. She’s goofy and obsessed with her favorite ball, which she never tires of playing with. To Hayley, Selly is more than just a pet; she’s like her child. “People think I’m crazy when I say that, but it’s true,” she says in the video below.

Hayley, who is currently a college student and lives with her mom, explains that Selly has become attached to her entire family. Every morning, Selly makes her way to Hayley’s mom’s door, waiting patiently, even if she’s not home. Selly knows exactly which door belongs to whom and makes herself at home wherever she pleases.

One of Selly’s quirks is her love for blankets. On the day she was brought home, she immediately grabbed a blanket and claimed it as her own. Ever since then, Hayley and her family have “sacrificed” countless blankets to Selly, and it’s a sacrifice they’re happy to make. “She just loves them, and it makes her happy,” Hayley says with a smile. One day, Selly even managed to drag two blankets up from the basement, skillfully navigating through the house to settle down on her bed.

Despite her brave and playful spirit, Selly still carries some fears. Loud noises, like passing cars, cause her to freeze in fear, and the sound of a magazine swatting a fly sends her into a nervous state. During these moments, Hayley is always there to comfort her, gently petting her and calming her down.

Selly also enjoys spending time outside, basking in the sun on the deck and playing in the yard. Though Hayley had never adopted a rescue dog before, she was prepared for the process to take time. However, Selly opened up surprisingly quickly, learning to trust her new family and let go of her past fears.

It was a mystery how Selly ended up in such a state, but her microchip revealed she once had a previous owner who had given her away. Being both a Pit Bull and blind, Selly faced many obstacles in finding a home. But despite her disabilities, Selly has never shown aggression—only kindness and love.

Merida is a senior who was found abandoned in a backyard with her sibling who had passed away. She was left to fend for herself as an 11-year-old with diabetes. Thankfully, Kanoa Rescue Foundation stepped in to save her, but she still needs your help!

Hayley reflects on the trauma Selly has endured, acknowledging that she may never fully understand what the dog has been through. “I just want her to know that I will never let anything happen to her,” Hayley says, determined to provide Selly with the love and security she deserves.

We are so grateful for Selly’s new life. Thank you to Hayley and her family for giving her everything she deserves (and more!) Click ‘play’ below to see Selly’s story.
