When a puppy named Jammy arrived at Marin Humane, an independent rescue in Novato, California, he immediately stole the hearts of everyone there. With an irresistible smile and a playful personality, it didn’t take long for the shelter staff to become smitten with him. However, they soon discovered that Jammy had more challenges than just finding a new home—he had a bit of a weight problem that needed attention. Jammy was surrendered to the shelter after his owner could no longer care for him, and upon arrival, he tipped the scales at 17.6 pounds.

For such a small dog, that was far more than he should weigh—his ideal weight would be closer to 10 pounds. His extra weight made it hard for him to move around comfortably, which meant he spent most of his time being carried—something he didn’t seem to mind at all.

But excess weight wasn’t the only obstacle Jammy faced. After a thorough checkup, the vets discovered he had 13 bladder stones that required immediate surgery. Despite these health issues, Jammy’s cheerful demeanor never wavered. Every new person he met became an instant friend, and he made sure to spread joy wherever he went.

“Jammy is a charming, funny little dude,” said Julia Lamont, social media and marketing specialist at Marin Humane, in an interview with The Dodo. “He’s friendly and easy-going, and he’s been social with everyone he’s met. He also has some silly quirks; for example, he’s enjoyed playing with a cat wand toy! He’s gone through lots of handling in his time at our shelter due to his health issues, and he’s been a superstar through all of it.”

After his successful surgery, Jammy moved into a foster home to recover. Surrounded by love, he quickly bounced back and returned to the shelter, ready to find his forever family. He’s been steadily losing weight and hopes to find an active home that will support his health journey while keeping him as happy as he’s always been.

Jammy loves to bask in the sun and go for walks, eagerly pulling his person in whatever direction he fancies. Mealtime is another favorite part of his day—he never hesitates to express his thoughts about his meals with enthusiastic barks. Having spent time around other animals, Jammy would thrive with a furry sibling to keep him company on fun-filled adventures.

Merida is a senior who was found abandoned in a backyard with her sibling who had passed away. She was left to fend for herself as an 11-year-old with diabetes. Thankfully, Kanoa Rescue Foundation stepped in to save her, but she still needs your help!

PUPDATE: When this article was first published, Jammy was still waiting for a family. The good news soon came that Jammy had found his forever human, and she had driven from Oregon to pick him up. May Jammy and his new mom live in perfect harmony. We just love a happy ending, don’t you?
