For dogs living in overcrowded shelters, the scariest thing isn’t a monster hiding in the shadows or something that goes bump in the night. It’s the uncertainty of tomorrow. It’s watching another day pass without a family coming to take them home, while shelters struggle to make room for the endless stream of animals in need.

But this Halloween season, five special Louisiana shelter dogs had a reason to celebrate. Thanks in part to the generosity of iHeartDogs Hero VIP Club members and a partnership with Greater Good Charities, these deserving pups were given an opportunity to leave their uncertain circumstances behind and fly toward a brighter future.

The appropriately named Escape on the 13th Rescue Flight, which took to the sky on October 13,  transported at-risk shelter pets from Louisiana to New Jersey, where they would have access to additional resources and new opportunities to find loving forever homes. Among the passengers were T-Bone, Rosa, Millie, Moxie, and Angel, five incredible dogs from three Louisiana shelters, each with a unique story and one very important thing in common: They all deserved a second chance.

And while this flight represented a fresh start for the dogs on board, it also helped create much-needed space in their original shelters, giving other vulnerable animals a better chance at survival.

Meet Five Very Special Passengers

T-Bone: A Little Dog With a Larger-Than-Life Personality

At just seven months old, T-Bone had already experienced the disappointment of being left behind. The adorable Pit Bull mix arrived at St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter as a stray, and when no one came to claim him, he found himself waiting for a family that might never arrive.

But T-Bone wasn’t about to let his circumstances dampen his enthusiasm for life! This short, stocky sweetheart quickly won over shelter staff with his wonderful personality, impressive manners, and ability to make friends with just about anyone.

Despite his young age, T-Bone was already a superstar in doggy playgroups, confidently joining groups of eight or more dogs without missing a beat. He was also making excellent progress learning basic commands like sit, down, and stay, proving that he had both the intelligence and eagerness to become an amazing family companion.

Thanks to the Escape on the 13th Rescue Flight, this pint-sized powerhouse made his way to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey, where he could continue showing off his big personality while waiting for someone to fall in love with him.

T-Bone may be short in stature, but he has more than enough love to fill an entire home!

Rosa: Learning to Trust, One Gentle Step at a Time

Not every rescue dog’s transformation happens overnight. Sometimes, the most beautiful progress comes through small moments of courage, patience, and trust. For Rosa, a one-and-a-half-year-old Shepherd mix from Iberville Parish Animal Shelter, that’s exactly how her journey began.

When Rosa first arrived at the shelter as a stray, she was frightened and unsure of the world around her. Although she never showed aggression, it was clear that this gentle girl needed time to understand that the people caring for her only wanted to help.

With patience and encouragement, Rosa slowly began to blossom. She learned to walk on a leash, became more comfortable interacting with people, and showed that she could get along beautifully with other dogs. Each small accomplishment represented another step away from fear and toward the confident, happy life she deserved.

By the time her rescue flight arrived, Rosa had already made tremendous progress. The sweet, submissive girl who once approached the world with uncertainty was beginning to discover just how wonderful life could be.

Her journey from Louisiana to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center offered another opportunity to build on that progress. With a fresh environment, caring hands, and the possibility of a forever family, Rosa’s next chapter was filled with hope.

For this brave girl, a second chance wasn’t just about traveling hundreds of miles. It was about discovering that the world could be a safe and loving place after all.

Millie and Moxie: From a Lonely Road to a Flight Full of Hope

For seven-month-old Terrier mixes Millie and Moxie, the road to a better life began on a lonely stretch of rural Louisiana.

The two young dogs were discovered wandering together along the side of a remote road, with no one to protect them from passing vehicles or the many dangers they might encounter. Thankfully, employees from a veterinary office happened to spot the pair and stopped to help.

That simple act of kindness changed everything.

Once safe and in the care of Save a Pet, Millie and Moxie revealed themselves to be two of the sweetest, most affectionate young dogs imaginable. Rather than allowing their frightening experience to make them fearful of people, both girls greeted everyone they met with wagging tails and endless enthusiasm.

The pair loved playing together and got along wonderfully with other dogs. And while their bond had helped them through an uncertain beginning, rescuers knew that Millie and Moxie were also capable of thriving independently. They didn’t need to be adopted together to enjoy happy, fulfilling lives.

Their places aboard the Escape on the 13th Rescue Flight brought them to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, where each girl would have the opportunity to find a family of her own.

It’s hard to imagine a more fitting transformation. Two puppies who were once wandering along a deserted road were now flying toward the possibility of safe, loving homes.

Whether their futures lead them to the same household or two different families, Millie and Moxie have already proven that they have more than enough love to share.

Angel: A Sweet Girl Who Never Stopped Loving

Some dogs seem to have an extraordinary ability to love unconditionally, no matter what life throws their way. Angel, a two-year-old Labrador mix from Iberville Parish Animal Shelter, is one of those dogs.

Angel found herself in need of a new home through no fault of her own when changes in her previous circumstances meant she could no longer stay with her family. But despite losing the life she once knew, this affectionate girl never lost her joyful spirit or her love for people.

In fact, Angel seemed determined to make every person she met feel like the most important person in the world!

Friendly, playful, and endlessly affectionate, Angel quickly became a favorite among those who cared for her. She was also fully housebroken and beautifully mannered, with plenty of that happy, energetic Labrador personality that makes the breed so beloved.

Whether she was playing, greeting a new friend, or simply soaking up affection, Angel approached every moment with enthusiasm and an open heart.

Her flight to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center gave her another opportunity to find the stability and companionship she deserved. Somewhere, a family may be searching for a dog just like Angel, without even realizing that their perfect companion has already been waiting for them.

And when that special family finally finds her, there’s little doubt that Angel will greet them with the same unconditional love she’s shown everyone along her journey.

More Than a Rescue Flight: A Second Chance for Shelter Pets

For T-Bone, Rosa, Millie, Moxie, and Angel, October 13 marked an important turning point. Instead of remaining in overcrowded Louisiana shelters with limited space and resources, these five deserving dogs were transported to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey, where they would have new opportunities to find their forever families.

But the impact of a rescue flight extends far beyond the animals traveling on board.

Every dog transported out of an overcrowded shelter opens up valuable space and resources for another animal in need. In communities where shelters face a constant influx of homeless pets, that additional space can make a life-changing difference.

That’s why partnerships like the one between iHeartDogs and Greater Good Charities, along with the ongoing support of our Hero VIP Club members, are so important. By helping move adoptable animals from overcrowded facilities to receiving shelters with greater capacity, these missions offer hope to the dogs who take flight while also supporting the shelters and communities they leave behind.

The Escape on the 13th Rescue Flight was more than a journey from Louisiana to New Jersey. It was a reminder that even when the future seems frightening and uncertain, compassion can create a path toward something better.
