For Lane Dryer and his family, this became abundantly clear after they took in a tiny kitten, never expecting that one day she would save the life of one of their cherished dogs. The stray kitten, who they named Binx, was just two months old when she began roaming the neighborhood. The Dryers took her in, and she quickly became part of their family. However, it wasn’t until a terrifying coyote attack unfolded that Binx would reveal her true bravery.
Now a full-grown cat, Binx couldn’t be more devoted to her dog siblings. Since the moment she joined the Dryer household, she formed a strong bond with the family’s dogs, fitting in perfectly with their playful personalities. The once tiny stray kitten quickly found her place in the pack.
“When Binx was just a baby, the dogs treated her like one of their own,” Lane Dryer explains. “They would pick her up in their mouths and carry her around the house, playing with her like they would with a toy. But Binx was never intimidated or scared of them. She’s always had this sense of fearlessness. She just owns her space.”
Binx’s confidence and connection to her dog siblings only grew over time. Her playful nature made her one of the family’s favorites, and she easily won over the hearts of everyone around her. However, none of the Dryers could have foreseen just how protective Binx would become of her canine brothers. The harrowing event unfolded in the late hours one evening in the Dryer family’s backyard. Lane and his family had let their dogs out for a quick bathroom break, unaware that danger was lurking nearby. “They cut her open pretty bad,” Lane recalls. “She was gushing blood from the wounds. It was a terrifying sight, and we didn’t know how serious it was.”
The family wasted no time and rushed Oakley to the nearest emergency veterinary clinic. Upon arrival, the vet team immediately set to work on stabilizing her. Oakley received stitches for her severe wounds, and her leg had to be placed in a splint. At first, there were concerns that Oakley might lose the leg altogether due to the extent of the injuries. “It was really incredible to see,” Lane shares, still in awe of his cat’s fearlessness. “Our little outdoor cat, who’s always been tough, just ran at two coyotes without a second thought. She could have easily been hurt, but she wasn’t going to let anything happen to Oakley. The way she ran them off was something we’ll never forget.”
The family remains deeply grateful for Binx’s intervention. Without her quick thinking and brave actions, the outcome could have been very different. Oakley might not have survived the attack had Binx not stepped in to save her. For the Dryers, Binx’s protective nature serves as a reminder of the deep bond that can form between animals, even those as different as a cat and a dog.
Today, Binx continues to be a cherished member of the Dryer family. She spends her days lounging in the sun, exploring the yard, and, of course, keeping a watchful eye on her dog siblings. Oakley, who has fully recovered, remains as playful as ever, blissfully unaware of the dangers she faced that fateful night.
For Lane and his family, Binx is more than just a pet—she’s a hero. Her selfless actions showed just how much love and loyalty can reside in even the smallest creatures. And while the coyotes may have been larger and fiercer, they were no match for Binx’s heart of gold.
