Little Delores was found wandering the streets of Detroit. The 13-year-old Poodle mix was filthy, covered in painful mats, and desperately in need of medical care. She behaved aggressively in her cage, but board members from NBS Animal Rescue knew her attitude was a result of her discomfort.

The sassy senior captured their hearts, and they immediately rescued her from the city shelter.

NBS’s veterinarian found that, in addition to severe neglect, poor Delores was suffering from an upper respiratory infection, bladder stones, and a resulting bladder infection. After years of untreated dental disease, she had just one rotten tooth left in her mouth.

Delores underwent a medical shave down and surgery to remove her bladder stones and single remaining tooth. The difference in her personality was instant and dramatic! She went from sore, miserable, and snappy to happy, spunky and cuddly!

She is now in a foster home, awaiting her forever family in comfort.

NBS Animal Rescue is one of many shelters and rescue groups across the country who receive free food through’s Rescue Bank Program. These healthy food donations are made possible by iHeartDogs customers like yourself, and they do much more than just feed dogs in need.

The money these organizations save on pet food allows them to provide specialized veterinary care to dogs like Delores. All-in-all, her care cost over $1,300. Without the savings Rescue Bank provides, rescues would not have the funds to help pups with special needs.

“Delores, like many dogs we take, had far more than vaccinations for medical needs,” NBS told iHeartDogs. “Her bills totaled well over $1,000. Saving money on food really helps us bridge the gap between what we receive in adoption fees vs. what we put into medical care.”
