25 Best Foods for a Bulldog Puppy

Mine was on Purina One Lamb & Rice for years, but he had to have 3 teeth pulled at 10 1/2 years old, so I make his food good now. He no longer has brown spots on his paws from licking them. So I think he was having an allergic reaction to the food. His food now is 6 eggs, whatever meat I have available, which is diced ham, rice, green beans, mixed vegetables, and 1 pack of Ramen. I’ve found it way cheaper than dog food. I always watch for sales on the human food, though, for him.

What was he currently being fed when you got him? If there are no issues and he is healthy, why change it? When we got our bullie, he had a protein buildup in his front leg, and we started feeding him IAMS, and he’s now over 6, and there’s no issue with his leg either. He’s always healthy, with solid poop, and loves going for his walks. If you feel the food you’re feeding him isn’t good enough, then do some research and see what you feel would be the best, and get a small bag to see how your bullie will react. Just because it’s good for others doesn’t mean it will be for you. Good luck

My dog’s food is raw by Primal, and he does very well with kibble, which has too much filler and a probiotic every day

We have always given our Bulldogs salmon-based dog food. Ours is on Purina Pro Plan Salmon and Rice now. (They were on the Salmon and Tuna, but Purina stopped making it.)

I’ve used Canidae Duck formula recommended by a Bulldog vet specialist. Iggy had allergies and tummy problems. The vet told me duck is the gentlest protein to digest. Even better than Salmon. It really made a difference

Taste of the Wild is really good. Stay away from poultry, look out for chicken broth or meal. Also, we had issues with pork

Start with whatever she was eating at the rescue. Keeping changing the diet will cause tummy upsets. Whatever you choose, make sure it doesn’t have Brewers Yeast in. Bulldogs have sensitive skin prone to yeast infections, which makes them very itchy. Brewer’s yeast is used as a vitamin supplement and taste enhancer, but awful for dogs prone to yeast infections. I started my girl on Fish 4 Dogs dry, and within a week, she was trying to rip her skin off. I changed her to Burns dry Sensitive, and she has been fine ever since.

For kibble, we have the most luck with natural balance, but the keys have been grain-free and limited ingredient diets.

We bought so many different kinds, and no matter what we fed him, he got sick immediately afterwards. We bought the bowl that makes him eat more slowly, but it did not affect him; he still ate fast and threw up. So we tried Fresh Pet, and he doesn’t get sick anymore. His hair is thick and shiny. That is all we feed him.

Mine had issues with beef. I use Rachel Ray chicken, or salmon, no grain. But I cook a turkey/quinoa/ vegetable mix, and I cook and mix it. He has done great! Vets suggested other stuff, but this has worked best. My boy has bad allergies, the worst I have seen! Good luck!

I make my Bulldogs’ food. It’s a pain and expensive, but it’s the only thing that curbs her allergies. Her food includes: ground beef, ground lamb, salmon, hard-boiled eggs, brown rice, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, yellow squash, spinach, sweet potatoes (sometimes butternut squash in place), peas, apples, cottage cheese, blueberries, and coconut oil. She also gets a vitamin supplement daily.

We feed the Purina Pro salmon. We live in the country, so he is still itchy, but give him a Benadryl, and he’s good to go. The only problem we ever had was when he was 2, we went to a friend’s, a lot, and they were giving him milk bone treats along with the rest of the gang (8 dogs total, 3 ours ). He developed pancreatitis, and $800 later, no more Milk-Bone with red dye!

My guy is almost 8, tried a lot of foods, but he’s been on Go Lamb sensitive. His coat is very nice, not locking up very much. I have done a lot of research and testing on him, and they say Lamb is the best for Bulldogs.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Bulldog Puppy Foods

1. What should I look for in the best food for my Bulldog puppy?

When choosing food for your Bulldog puppy, prioritize high-quality protein sources (like chicken, lamb, or fish), healthy fats (for skin and coat), and DHA for brain development. Avoid artificial additives, fillers, and by-products. Bulldogs are prone to allergies and sensitivities, so limited-ingredient or grain-free options may help reduce issues.

2. How much should I feed my Bulldog puppy each day?

Bulldog puppies typically require 3 to 4 meals per day until they’re about 6 months old. The exact amount depends on their age, weight, and the calorie density of the food. Check the feeding guide on the food label and consult your vet to ensure proper portioning for healthy growth without overfeeding.

3. Are grain-free diets good for Bulldog puppies?

Grain-free diets can be beneficial if your Bulldog has grain allergies or sensitivities. However, not all Bulldogs need to avoid grains. Whole grains like oatmeal and brown rice can offer valuable nutrients. Always check with your veterinarian before switching to a grain-free formula, especially for growing puppies.

4. What ingredients should I avoid in Bulldog puppy food?

Avoid foods with artificial colors, flavors, preservatives (like BHA/BHT), and meat by-products. Bulldogs are prone to skin and digestive issues, so steer clear of common allergens like corn, soy, and wheat if your pup shows signs of sensitivity.

5. Can Bulldog puppies eat raw food diets?

While some owners choose raw diets for perceived health benefits, raw feeding carries risks like bacterial contamination and nutrient imbalances—especially critical for puppies. If considering a raw diet, work closely with a veterinary nutritionist to ensure it’s complete and balanced for your Bulldog’s growth stage.

6. How can I tell if a puppy food is helping my Bulldog thrive?

Signs of a good diet include a shiny coat, firm stools, healthy energy levels, and steady growth. If your puppy experiences frequent itching, gas, or loose stools, it may be time to try a different formula. Regular vet visits and weight checks can help monitor their development.

7. Are breed-specific puppy foods worth it for Bulldogs?

Breed-specific formulas like those made for Bulldogs can be helpful as they often address common health concerns such as joint support, skin sensitivity, and digestive health. However, they’re not essential if you choose a high-quality, well-balanced puppy food tailored to medium breed growth needs.

As always, be sure to consult your veterinarian before making any health changes to your bulldog’s food. iHeartDogs is reader-supported, so some of the links above may be affiliate links where we receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.
