Homemade chicken and rice with vegetables mixed in. We also bathe them in Dawn. We stopped giving them hard food because Lola is the oldest and she has a hard time with it. What we do for one, we do for all 3. Canned food has something in it that has made all 3 of them very sick. We’ve been on homemade for around 8 years now.

RAW for meals….RAW for treats…goats milk, bone broth. Many pets are allergic to the sugars/fillers/starches in most Kibble. Feeding a species-appropriate diet, such as RAW eliminates many allergies/digestive issues in our dogs and cats. I feed Steve’s Real Food, Primal bone broths, Answers goat’s milk, and single-source human-grade freeze-dried RAW treats ( pork liver, beef liver, hearts, etc.) WATCH PET FOOLED ON PRIME VIDEO. Great insight into the pet food industry. About kibble, about RAW, the whole shabang.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Foods for Dachshunds with Allergies
1. What are common food allergies in Dachshunds?
Dachshunds are commonly allergic to ingredients like beef, dairy, chicken, wheat, corn, and soy. These allergens can trigger symptoms such as itching, ear infections, gastrointestinal upset, and skin rashes. Identifying the specific allergen through an elimination diet or veterinary allergy testing is essential for proper management.
2. How can I tell if my Dachshund has a food allergy?
Signs of food allergies in Dachshunds often include persistent itching, red or inflamed skin, paw licking, recurring ear infections, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult your vet to rule out other conditions and explore a potential dietary cause.
3. What ingredients should I look for in hypoallergenic dog food for Dachshunds?
Look for limited-ingredient diets that avoid common allergens and contain novel proteins such as duck, venison, or salmon. Grain-free options or those using gluten-free grains like oats or rice may also help. Always opt for dog foods that clearly label all ingredients and avoid artificial additives and preservatives.
4. Are grain-free diets better for Dachshunds with allergies?
Not necessarily. While some Dachshunds with grain sensitivities may benefit from grain-free diets, most food allergies are protein-related. A grain-free formula can be helpful if your dog is specifically allergic to grains like wheat or corn, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution.
5. Is homemade dog food a good option for Dachshunds with allergies?
Homemade dog food can be a great option, allowing complete control over ingredients. However, it must be nutritionally balanced to meet your dog’s needs. Always consult with a veterinary nutritionist to ensure your homemade meals support your Dachshund’s health and development.
6. How long does it take to see improvement after switching to allergy-friendly dog food?
Typically, you may start to see improvements in your Dachshund’s symptoms within 4 to 8 weeks after changing to a hypoallergenic diet. However, it can vary depending on the severity of the allergy and the specific food used. Consistency is key, and treats or supplements should also align with the allergen-free plan.
7. Can supplements help manage food allergies in Dachshunds?
Yes, supplements like omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish oil), probiotics, and digestive enzymes can help support skin health and gut function, potentially reducing allergic reactions. Always check with your vet before adding supplements to your dog’s diet to ensure they are appropriate and safe.
