I have been feeding my 14.5-year-old toy poodle Orijen for 13 years. She is allergic to chicken, so I chose the fish and beef options. I also supplement daily with boiled beef, white fish, salmon, fresh spinach, grated carrots, diced sweet potatoes, brown rice, and apples. I cook a big batch and freeze it in smaller portions to last a few days at a time.

Homemade food, extra lean ground beef, lean ground chicken, and freshly caught salmon, not farm-raised. Boil one of these meats and when almost cooked, add wild rice. Finish cooking. The mixture should be 1/4 rice to 3/4 meat. Alternate the different meats. Salmon is excellent for skin. Do not feed any dry dog food at all, as this is usually the cause. Veterinarian Clinic.

Better watch out with that chicken, as most dogs who have eating issues are allergic to chicken or chicken byproducts in dog food or chicken made at home. Consult with your vet and get prescription dog food; it will make a world of difference for your dog. We have a mini poodle that had stomach issues. Went through different dog foods, made her food at home, on different meds, had an ultrasound done, blood work, etc. Ended up taking her to an Internal medicine doctor who put her on a special canned and dry dog food, and she no longer has stomach issues and is healthy and happy. No more vomiting, diarrhea, burping, etc. Chicken was one of the main culprits.

I started cooking for my girls as she was scratching constantly. Eliminated the common allergens…kibble, poultry, and focused on beef, broccoli, salmon oil, blueberries, carrots, and eggs. It kept getting worse. Finally did a DNA through 5strands testing. She was intolerant of all those things. She now gets white rice, ground turkey, ground pork, green beans, and apples cooked into a stew. Way better. Of course, she is also intolerant to acrylic fibers, but I can’t pull out my carpet and replace it right now

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Foods for Poodles with Allergies
1. What are the most common food allergies in poodles?
Poodles often develop allergies to common protein sources such as beef, chicken, and dairy. Grains like wheat, corn, and soy can also trigger allergic reactions. Identifying these allergens early is crucial to managing your poodle’s diet effectively.
2. How can I tell if my poodle has a food allergy?
Signs of food allergies in poodles include itchy skin, chronic ear infections, gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhea, and excessive licking or biting at the paws. If you notice these symptoms, consult a veterinarian for an elimination diet or allergy testing.
3. What ingredients should I look for in dog food for allergic poodles?
Look for limited-ingredient diets that feature novel proteins such as duck, venison, or salmon, and are free from common allergens. Hypoallergenic dog foods that exclude grains, artificial additives, and by-products are often best for allergic poodles.
4. Is grain-free food better for poodles with allergies?
Grain-free food can be beneficial if your poodle has a specific grain allergy. However, not all poodles need a grain-free diet. It’s important to identify the actual allergen before making this switch, as some grain-free formulas may include other ingredients that could cause sensitivity.
5. Can homemade dog food help manage my poodle’s allergies?
Yes, homemade dog food allows you to control every ingredient and eliminate potential allergens. A vet or canine nutritionist should guide you to ensure your dog gets a balanced diet while avoiding allergenic ingredients.
6. Are there specific brands that are best for poodles with food allergies?
Some trusted brands known for hypoallergenic or limited-ingredient foods include Royal Canin Veterinary Diet, Hill’s Prescription Diet, Blue Buffalo Basics, and Natural Balance. Always consult with your vet before transitioning to a new brand or formula.
7. How long does it take to see improvement after swi
itching to an allergy-friendly diet?
Most poodles begin to show improvement within 4 to 6 weeks of starting a new diet, though some may take longer. Consistency is key—avoid feeding treats or table scraps that could contain allergens during this time.
