My staffy girl has awful allergies! Both food & environmental. She’s now on grain-free food, low-carb, fresh meat, salmon, venison, chicken, and some beef. Baths, baths & more baths with treatment regimens. It has finally started working after trying so many different things to stop the scratching, redness, and soreness. We felt so bad for her. Thankful we found a solution for our girl! It was driving us crazy! Another thing that works well for yeast between their toes from the grass is apple cider vinegar with Mother. One part apple cider vinegar with two parts water. The acid neutralizes the yeast and stops the growth. Spray on their paws with extra attention in between the toes. You’ll be shocked at how quickly it works. * Only use apple cider vinegar with MOTHER.

ORIJEN Grain Free High Protein Dry Dog Food

ORIJEN Grain Free High Protein Dry Dog Food

We use Orijens fit and trim. Have tried so many others, but this has put all Buddy’s little problems to bed. He has a very sensitive tummy, is windy, occasionally sick, has itchy skin, and his ears would flare up every couple of weeks. Having been neutered would be prone to gaining weight if too many snacks were given, and his seasonal alopecia hasn’t come back. He’s been on it for 12 months. Granted, a little expensive (12kg for £95), but his health and happiness are more important.

I have said this before, that a very lovely Vet told me that Staffies have a mild tummy reaction to various food stuffs and that, of all the cooked meats, TURKEY IS BEST, so I give her turkey-based dog food and roasted turkey…she likes tinned salmon (and smoked) and those, alongside WAGG chicken biscuits seems to be her very best happy and healthy

My staffy used to have really bad allergies; she was covered in lumps. I used to make all her own food, thinking I was doing the right thing. Once I changed to Ivory coat Grain-free salmon and ocean fish, and for her meat, I buy a SK- d salmon and tapioca roll. Amazing the difference, no lumps and bumps anymore. I was told a lot of dogs have allergies to chicken, and in most products, they have chicken by-products in them, even if not labeled as chicken.

Acana, limit ingredient lamb, and Okanagan apple. I tried A LOT of different brands and proteins. Finally, I work at PetSmart, and we sell an allergy testing kit, so I did that, and it showed me what Duke was allergic to and safe foods for him. Did you know dogs can be allergic to rosemary, and in 95% of the food I have found that are limited diet have rosemary extract. Frustrating.

We have been using Orjien, but it has just been brought out by MARS, so we are moving to Carnilove True Fresh, I think. It’s hypoallergenic, has a great meat content, and it contains raw ingredients, which is why we moved to the Origin. I would prefer a full raw diet, but mine are picky. Raw is miles better, fully hypoallergenic, and single proteins are available in makes like Benyfit Wilson’s Paleo Ridge

I feed mine boiled chicken and rice in the morning and boiled minced beef and veg at night. He’s 9 and has struggled to get him to eat. He refused dog food; a raw diet made him sick. He’s been having this for 4 years now. He’s looking healthy, no diarrhea or vomiting, and he looks forward to his meals

Frequently Asked Questions About Feeding Staffordshire Bull Terriers with Allergies

1. What are the most common food allergies in Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

Staffordshire Bull Terriers commonly develop allergies to proteins like beef, chicken, dairy, wheat, and soy. Identifying and eliminating these from their diet can help manage allergic reactions such as skin irritation, ear infections, or gastrointestinal issues.

2. How can I tell if my Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a food allergy?

Symptoms of food allergies in Staffies include excessive itching, red or inflamed skin, chronic ear infections, diarrhea, and vomiting. If these symptoms persist, a vet may recommend an elimination diet or allergy testing.

3. What are the best protein sources for a Staffy with allergies?

Novel proteins such as duck, venison, rabbit, or salmon are often ideal for allergic dogs. These less commonly used meats can help reduce allergic reactions and are easier for sensitive dogs to tolerate.

4. Are grain-free diets good for Staffordshire Bull Terriers with allergies?

Grain-free diets can be beneficial if your Staffy is allergic to grains like wheat or corn. However, not all dogs need a grain-free diet. It’s essential to identify the specific allergen before switching foods, and consult with your vet for guidance.

5. Can hypoallergenic dog food help my Staffordshire Bull Terrier?

Yes, hypoallergenic dog foods are formulated with limited ingredients and novel proteins to minimize allergic reactions. Many are also free of common allergens and artificial additives, making them a safe choice for Staffies with food sensitivities.

6. What ingredients should I avoid in my Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s diet?

Avoid common allergens like beef, chicken, dairy, soy, wheat, and artificial additives. Look for dog foods labeled as limited-ingredient or hypoallergenic, and always check ingredient lists for hidden sources of allergens.

7. How long does it take to see improvement after changing my dog’s diet?

Improvements can often be seen within 4 to 6 weeks of starting a new allergy-friendly diet. However, every dog is different, and it may take longer to identify the right food. Consistency and patience are key when managing food allergies in Staffies.
