“Herky is a 2-year-old male Terrier mix who entered the municipal shelter in Jefferson County, TN on November 3, 2018. An owner who said she had too many dogs surrendered Herky.

“At 20 pounds, he would ordinarily have flown out of the shelter in a quick adoption. The shelter was in a state of transition, however, resulting from the previous contractor deciding to stop accepting owner-surrendered pets. The funder (the county government) regarded this decision as a breach of contract and awarded the shelter contract to a new contractor. As a consequence of the uproar, Herky sat in his kennel for two months.

“On December 27, 2018, thanks to a GreaterGood.org grant funded by iHeartDogs.com, Herky got an opportunity to go on transport to the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover, NJ. When life returned to normal after the holidays, Herky found his forever home and is reported to be doing wonderfully well with his new family!”
