Hunter Lawrence and his wife Sarah have been traveling the globe for years. In 2010, Hunter went on a trip to Honduras where he discovered his love for photography.
“I used a friend’s DSLR [digital single-lens reflex camera], and fell in love with the ability to convey a story and change someone’s life with something as simple as a picture,” Hunter told iHeartDogs. “After that trip, I was hooked.”
Aspen, the couple’s four-year-old Golden Retriever, has traveled with them wherever they go. “Aspen loves hiking, camping, road trips, swimming and climbing mountains,” Hunter said.
They took images of him in the places they visited. What Hunter wasn’t expecting was how much people would love the pictures of Aspen.
“Naturally, we realized we were in really beautiful places, with a really beautiful dog…so we would photograph him,” he said. “I never thought of starting an Instagram for him, in fact I thought it was sort of silly. When we realized that we had some really amazing imagery of him, we decided one day we should start sharing it. The rest is history.”
Thinking back on one of the more epic trips of our lives. A trip that has shaped the past 6 months. To think that an off the cuff drive up to Canada would put our dog into the world of “things gone viral” is beyond us. I can’t tell you how many times @sarah_michelle_lawrence and I have just sat there laughing in disbelief that our pup is getting so much attention. We’ll just look over at Aspen and say “you have no clue what’s going on bud…and neither do we.” All the while he just looks at us, and then runs out the door to go play with his toy. It’s easy to get lost in all the buzz. Our inboxes have been flooded with the emails from major news networks and magazines since asking to do a story on us or on Aspen. It’s funny how our human instinct is to try to take credit for things we never even intended to happen, or to feel like we deserve (x) or (y). I mean sure, we took the photo, but let’s be honest, I posted an image of our dog in a canoe that I sort of liked…the worldwide response it received was 100% out of my control. I guess my point is, stay humble my friends. No matter how elevated you ever become or seem to be in your craft, never forget that you were once that kid buying his first camera.
Hunter’s Instagram account has over 114,000 followers, many of whom are there just to look at Aspen’s lovely photos, which are truly pieces art.
One of Aspen’s next trips may include Alberta, Canada, and of course, they venture to the mountains almost every weekend.
