A couple recently had a remarkable surprise when their beloved Pit Bull, Pearl, gave birth to a new litter of puppies. At first, Annise and her boyfriend Greg, seasoned dog lovers and proud parents of two Pit Bulls, Pearl and Harley, thought it was just another joyful occasion to welcome more adorable pups into their family. But as they took a closer look, they were astounded to find that one puppy was quite different from the others — it had a strikingly greenish tint.

Initially, Greg didn’t believe what he was seeing. “I thought it was blue. I thought it was going to turn blue and be gray later,” he shared, still processing the unique discovery. Annise admitted she hadn’t noticed the unusual color immediately, but when another puppy was born with the typical coloration, she was startled to realize, “The first one is a different color.”

Intrigued by this unexpected green hue, Annise and Greg turned to the internet for answers, hoping to understand what could have caused their puppy’s unique shade. They quickly learned that their little green puppy wasn’t the first of its kind. Similar stories from across the world described other rare cases of puppies born with unusual colors, such as a puppy named Pistachio from Italy and another named Shamrock from Ireland, both of whom also had greenish fur at birth.

Inspired by these stories, Annise and Greg decided to name their unique pup “Fiona,” after the character from Shrek, known for her own green skin. According to research, the unusual green color in puppies is caused by exposure to biliverdin, a green pigment found in the mother’s placenta, and it typically fades within a few weeks. Knowing Fiona’s green tint would only be temporary made this experience even more special for the couple, who now view it as a rare and memorable moment in their journey as pet parents.

Excited about the journey ahead, Annise and Greg eagerly look forward to watching Fiona’s color gradually fade to a more conventional shade, while they cherish these first few weeks of their rare green puppy. For them, Fiona’s unique appearance has already created an unforgettable bond and story they’ll share for years to come.
