A young woman and her dog are safe after six terrifying days in the Montana wilderness. 23-year-old Madeline Connelly and her dog Mogi became lost while hiking at Great Bear Wilderness near Glacier National Park on May 4.

Family reported her missing that very night when she and Mogi failed to check in after what was meant to be a quick hike.

Spring is in full swing in most of the United States, but in the Montana mountains, the nights are near freezing. Connelly and Mogi had only overalls, a T-shirt, a hooded sweater, a leash, and a set of keys. They went without food for most of their ordeal, but were lucky enough to find creeks and streams for drinking water.

After hiking up to 10 miles each day, Connelly and Mogi were discovered about five miles from where her car was located. They were hungry and exhausted, but alive! The brave survivor offered to hike the rest of the way out, but search and rescue teams insisted she be airlifted.

The Great Bear Wilderness consists of 285,771 acres of terrain south of Glacier National Park. Local wildlife includes wolverine, deer, elk, moose, black bears, mountain goats and mountain sheep. The area is also known for having one of the largest grizzly bear populations in the lower 48 states.

“She’s a very fortunate young lady,” Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry told the Chicago Tribune.
