Move Over Labradors, After 31 Years America Has A New Top Dog

For over three decades, the Labrador Retriever held the crown as America’s most beloved dog breed, celebrated for its friendly nature and devotion. However, the reign of this iconic breed has come to an end. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), the French Bulldog claimed the top spot, dethroning the Lab after 31 years. The change reflects a shift in preferences among dog owners. The rankings, based on registrations of nearly 716,500 dogs in 2022, revealed that French Bulldogs accounted for about 1 in 7 registrations.

With approximately 108,000 Frenchies registered, the breed surpassed Labrador Retrievers by over 21,000, signaling their meteoric rise in popularity. This trend is no fluke—French Bulldogs have been steadily climbing the rankings for a decade. In 2012, they held the #14 spot, but since then, registrations have surged by a staggering 1,000%. Their unique appeal has propelled them to become the most sought-after breed in the nation.

Historically, French Bulldogs were a status symbol for America’s elite in the early 1900s before their popularity waned. Their recent comeback can be attributed, in part, to high-profile celebrity endorsements. Stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Megan Thee Stallion, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Reese Witherspoon, and Lady Gaga are all proud Frenchie owners. The breed also shone in dog show competitions, with a Frenchie named Winston earning second place at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and first at the National Dog Show in 2022.

French Bulldogs are adored for their quirky charm and suitability for urban living. “They’re comical, friendly, loving little dogs,” Patty Sosa, a spokesperson for the French Bull Dog Club of America, shared with the AP. She noted that their minimal grooming needs and adaptability to apartment living make them a practical choice for city dwellers. The AKC also highlights their quiet demeanor and low exercise requirements, further endearing them to those with limited space.

With their signature bat-like ears and compact size, Frenchies offer a distinctive look that stands out among other breeds. Yet, their surge in popularity hasn’t been without criticism.

“French bulldogs can be a polarizing topic,” veterinarian Dr. Carrie Stefaniak explained. Their breeding has led to certain health challenges, including respiratory issues, spinal deformities, and the need for costly cesarean deliveries due to their large heads. Despite these concerns, their charm and suitability for modern lifestyles have cemented their place as America’s new favorite dog.

While Labradors remain a cherished breed, the rise of the French Bulldog reflects a shift in priorities, with more people opting for smaller, apartment-friendly companions that bring plenty of personality in a petite package.
