Salmonella is one of the most common reasons for dog treat recalls. Since the bacteria can affect both dogs and humans, companies need to be cautious when their pet products test positive for Salmonella.

One company selling jerky for dogs discovered that some of their treats were testing positive, so they quickly removed them from the warehouse and stopped selling them. Luckily, this concern was caught before these treats reached consumers.

What Products Were Recalled?

Carolina Prime Pet, Inc. recalled five varieties of their jerky treats after Hollywood Feed, LLC, reported that the products tested positive for Salmonella. The following products were affected:

  • Hollywood Feed Carolina Made USA Farm Raised Beef Jerky (5 oz. / 141g; Lot 20082323; Best by 02/25/25 L2)
  • Hollywood Feed Carolina Made USA Farm Raised Chicken Jerky (5 oz. / 141g; Lot 20082323; Best by 02/25/25 L2)
  • Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Wild Elk Jerky (5 oz. / 141g; Lot 20082423; Best by 02/24/25 L2)
  • Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Pork Jerky (6 oz. / 141g; Lot 20082523; Best by 02/25/2025 L2)
  • Hollywood Feed Carolina Made USA Farm Raised Turkey Jerky (6 oz. / 141g; Lot 20082423; Best by 02/24/2025 L2)

The recall occurred on September 27th, 2023. It wasn’t widely publicized because the products were only sent to Hollywood Feed, and the company acted quickly before the products went off to any dog parents. So, there’s no need to worry about the affected products ending up in your home, but feel free to check the lot codes on your packages just to be safe.

These products were removed from the Hollywood Feed warehouse, and no other products by the company are affected.

A Recent Supplier Change

Only a few days before this recall, Hollywood Feed mentioned in a comment that they were switching suppliers from Pennsylvania Made to Carolina Made. So, they hadn’t been working with Carolina Made for long before this incident.

“Our supplier has not been able to be consistent. We are discontinuing Pennsylvania Made and replacing with Carolina Made jerky. The Carolina Made will be better in supply with the same great quality, but at a lesser price,” Hollywood Feed wrote on their website on September 18th.

Salmonella Risk for Pets and Humans

Salmonella is a serious risk in jerky products, so pet parents buying jerky should always make sure they wash their hands after handling these treats. It’s also best to keep young children away from jerky treats whenever possible.

Many dogs carrying Salmonella don’t show any symptoms, but some pets could experience vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or dehydration. Dogs can pass Salmonella to humans, which could lead to similar symptoms to dogs, such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and headaches.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry with your dog’s food or treats, so keeping an eye out for recall alerts is the best way to ensure your furry friends stay safe.
