“The location of Natchez-Adams County Humane Society is Adams County, Mississippi, just off the Mississippi River. They pride themselves on being very proactive in advertising and implementing programs to help find adopters and fosters. However, when they reached out to GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Rebuild program for ideas and suggestions, we knew exactly how to help. We discussed plenty of ideas and a game plan formed. After driving a total of 2,500 miles, the crew and trailer finally made it, and it was time to go to work!

“The first step was to clear a lot of brush and other vegetation that had overgrown and became a hindrance to the day-to-day operations of the shelter. The overgrown vegetation not only had to be cut, but disposed of to make the property more usable and allow for more kennels to house dogs. A building on-site had to be demolished which freed up even more room. As shelter staff/volunteers have very few spare minutes during their day, sometimes simple tasks like organizing can get overlooked. That was the case with Natchez-Adams Animal Shelter.

“They have a huge barn that had been used as storage and was in need of organization. Once we organized things, the shelter had a lot of unused room for kennels. These kennels were placed in this unused area of the barn to house the dogs that are on their way to transport. Keeping them separate from the other dogs helps to keep them healthy and ready for their trip to their new home! Some painting and shelving were also added to help keep the barn organized and looking brand new.

“After just one day, the progress was immediately recognizable and immensely appreciated by the staff members. Now the dogs that are on their way to their new home have their area to wait, keeping them healthy and safe to travel. This allows so many more animals to be adopted, which in turn increases the number of animals that the shelter can save. This may not sound like a big improvement, but to date, these improvements have helped 84,231 dogs in just three years. WOW!!!” – Rescue Rebuild
