The 5 Biggest Myths About Chinese Cresteds

The Chinese Crested breed, known for its distinctive appearance and lively temperament, has often been misunderstood and wrongly judged. As a proud and long-time owner of Chinese Cresteds, I feel it’s high time to address and debunk some of the most common myths about these enchanting little dogs.

Myth 1: Chinese Cresteds are Hairless

The first and perhaps most prevalent myth about Chinese Cresteds is that they are all hairless. While there is indeed a hairless variety, known for its smooth skin and tufts of hair on the head, tail, and feet, there’s also a powderpuff version. Powderpuffs sport a full, soft coat. It’s crucial to understand that both versions can come from the same litter, making this breed delightfully unpredictable!

Myth 2: They are Hypoallergenic

People often believe that the hairless variant of the Chinese Crested is hypoallergenic. This term suggests that they won’t cause an allergic reaction, which, unfortunately, isn’t accurate. While they do have less fur to shed, they still produce dander, which is a common allergen. Therefore, they might be a better choice for those with mild allergies, but they are not entirely hypoallergenic.

Myth 3: Chinese Cresteds are Fragile and Delicate

With their slender bodies and unique hair patterns, Chinese Cresteds might appear delicate, but they are far from it. They are agile, athletic, and love to play. They thrive in various dog sports such as agility, obedience, and even lure coursing. Although they appreciate a good cuddle, they also enjoy the chance to burn off energy.

Myth 4: They are not Good with Children or Other Pets

Another widespread myth is that Chinese Cresteds don’t do well with children or other pets. On the contrary, these dogs are sociable and generally have a high tolerance level, making them great companions for kids. They also get along well with other pets, including other dogs. However, due to their small size, interactions with very young children and larger pets should be supervised to prevent accidental injuries.

Myth 5: Chinese Cresteds are High Maintenance

Many people view the Chinese Crested, particularly the hairless variety, as a high-maintenance breed due to their skincare requirements. While they do need protection from harsh weather and the sun, and regular baths to keep their skin clean, the upkeep is not as overwhelming as many believe. In fact, the powderpuff version, with their non-shedding coat, can often require more grooming.

The bottom line is that Chinese Cresteds are wonderful, sociable pets with an unfair reputation for being high-maintenance or delicate. Like all breeds, they have their specific care requirements, but this should not deter potential owners. If you offer them love, appropriate care, and understanding, they will reward you with a companionship filled with love and a fair share of entertaining antics.

Understanding and dispelling these myths about Chinese Cresteds allows us to better appreciate their unique qualities and quirks. These delightful dogs, with their affectionate nature, playful spirits, and distinctive look, make a lovable addition to many households. As a long-time owner, I can attest to the joy and companionship that these dogs bring. Despite the misconceptions, owning a Chinese Crested is a fulfilling and heartwarming experience.
