HEALTH ALERT #1

Could The Coronavirus Help Put An End To The Chinese Dog Meat Trade?

The Chinese city of Shenzhen hopes to outlaw the consumption of dogs and cats in addition to the wildlife believed to have caused the earliest cases of the current Coronavirus outbreak.

The proposed regulations would allow only nine meats to be served in restaurants or privately consumed. These include pork, chicken, beef, rabbit, and seafood.

Since the proposal recognizes dogs and cats as pets, their consumption would be banned along with snakes, turtles and frogs, despite their popularity in southern China’s cuisine.

Could Shenzhen’s efforts to ban the consumption of wildlife and companion animals start a domino effect among other Chinese cities?

The Easiest Way To Feed Your Dog Is Also The Healthiest

Most commercially-prepared U.S. pet food is formulated to be “complete and balanced.” This means it technically meets all your dog’s nutritional requirements, but where do the ingredients come from? Are they safely sourced and processed? What about all those additives you can’t even pronounce?

A loss of trust in the safety and quality of commercial dog foods has caused many pet parents to seek out healthier options; some even preparing their own recipes from scratch.

While this is a step in the right direction, ensuring full, balanced nutrition is a challenge. Every dog has their own unique needs based on their weight, age, breed, activity level, and health status.

That’s where Ollie comes in. Instead of measuring, dosing, mixing, and cooking, let the canine nutritionists at Ollie take away the guesswork and develop a personalized formula specifically for your dog’s needs.

Better yet, it’s delivered right to your door, portioned to your dog’s specific needs, only when you need it.

High-quality meat protein is a hugely important part of a balanced canine diet. That’s why all of Ollie’s vet-crafted recipes are centered around USDA-certified, human-grade chicken, lamb, turkey, and beef, carefully sourced from family-run farms in Australia and the United States.

Ollie never uses fillers or artificial flavors to fool your dog’s taste buds. Instead, they tailor each meal with a one-to-one ratio of meat protein and other essential ingredients such as natural fats from cod liver oil and carbohydrates from starches, vegetables, and seeds.

When food comes from real, fresh ingredients it is naturally delicious!

For a limited time, readers of The Healthy Hound newsletter can try their first box of Ollie’s fresh, healthy, personalized dog food for 60% off! Did we mention it’s always delivered free right to your door?

Would You Spend $50,000 To Clone Your Dog?

Like many dog parents, Alicia and David Tschirhart believed they had the perfect dog. So when Yellow Lab, Marley passed away they decided to clone him. The price tag? $50,000.

Despite the steep cost, the Tschirharts have no regrets. They say their children will now have more than just vague memories of Marley, they’ll have the next best thing: an identical twin.

But while the new pooch, Ziggy is strikingly similar to his predecessor, a cloned dog is not an exact replica. As with twins, personality traits are based on much more than just genetics.

In addition to the cost and subtle differences, many question the ethics of dog cloning. Not only do 1.5 million dogs die in shelters every year, the cloning process may be seen as inhumane.

“Cloning experiments reflect a spirit common to all systematic forms of cruelty to animals,” the Humane Society of the United States said on its website. “They treat animals as commodities alone, instead of as living individuals with needs and natures of their own.”

Do Dogs Understand The Concept Of Time?

Whether I’m gone for 20 minutes or four hours, my dogs greet me with the same enthusiasm. I will admit, their reaction when I have been away over night is far bigger, leading me to believe they definitely understand the difference between hours and days.

But what about the difference between minutes and hours? Or hours and more hours?

The answer may lie in our dogs’ incredible sense of smell. The longer we are gone, the more our smell dissipates. With a regular routine, dogs eventually learn that at a certain scent level, we will return home.

Discover what scientists have to say about the accuracy of your dog’s sniffer and the other daily clues they use to keep track of time.

How Cold Does It Get In A Dog House?

by Dr. Ernie Ward

Winter is drawing to a close, but it is still pretty chilly in some corners of the world. Since most cases are not reported, statistics are not available on how many pet dogs freeze to death each year.

While it isn’t as common as summer heat stroke, winter freezing deaths do happen.

That’s why Dr. Ernie Ward – who you may remember from his viral video on how quickly heat rises in a parked car – decided to do a similar video demonstrating the frigid temperatures within a winter dog house.

Check out his educational video blog where he personally withstands a frigid outdoor dog house on a typical winter night in Chicago.
