HEALTH ALERT #1

What To Do If You Suspect A Dog Is Being Abused

Not all pet parents care for their dogs as thoroughly as they should. They may feed a poor quality diet or leave them home alone for hours at a time. As heartbreaking as these transgressions may be, they do not qualify as abuse.

Abuse typically comes in the form of severe neglect, hoarding, abandonment, or direct physical violence. Should you suspect a dog is being abused, contact your local animal control agency or dial 9-1-1.

If your area lacks the proper animal welfare agency and your local authorities are not equipped to deal with animal cruelty cases, you can also contact The Humane Society’s Animal Rescue Team.

A Tip From +THE HEALTHY HOUND

Do not apply hand sanitizer to your dog’s paws. Instead, clean them with a bit of mild dish soap diluted with water.

HAPPY, HEALTHY MUST HAVES

5 Ways Probiotics Can Help Your Dog

Within every canine digestive tract there are healthy microscopic bacteria called probiotics that help keep the system running smoothly. Factors such as stress, illness, and medications can throw off this delicate balance leading to diarrhea, allergies, poor coat quality, and more.

Probiotic supplements support the gastrointestinal system as well as other healthy body functions.

Pronine™ Flora is the most complete digestive supplement available for dogs, containing probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and digestive herbs for complete GI health.

The 10 Most Common Choking Hazards For Dogs

Choking is a very real threat for dogs, especially those that gulp their food or swallow non-food items.

If you know your dog is at high risk for choking, be sure to monitor them while they eat, during play, and anytime they have a chew bone or treat. You may also want to “bone” up on your doggy Heimlich skills.

And of course, learn which items pose the most likely choking hazards for your pooch.

IN THE NEWS

Scientists Say Dogs Enjoy These Music Genres Most

“Music has charms to sooth a savage beast,” and according to a study conducted at the Scotish SPCA, it also helps reduce stress in kenneled dogs. If dogs in shelters and boarding facilities can find relief in music, it can certainly help your pup relax while you are at work.

The question is, of all the many genres, which do dogs respond to the most? The researchers played soft rock, Motown, pop, reggae, and classical songs and observed 38 dogs’ reactions.

Find out which two genres resulted in the most relaxed behaviors – then get on Spotify and create your Puppy Playlist!

A Tip From +THE HEALTHY HOUND

Does your pooch have rough, dry, or itchy elbow calluses? Try a soothing essential oil and butter-based balm.

Dogs that are not used to the chaos of kids most often react with avoidance tactics. However, if a particular child is too persistent, it could lead to disaster.

In this post, Dr. Kathryn Primm explores the reasons dogs fear babies and children, as well as how best to handle the situation.
