When Russia invaded Ukraine, many people were separated from their loved ones, including their pets. Some Ukrainians were fortunate enough to flee their homes with their furry friends by their sides, but others had no way to safely get to their dogs and cats.
A Husky named Nessie got separated from her human when the war broke out. She was left to wander the streets, unsure where her family went. Luckily, someone found her all alone, which ultimately led her back to her favorite person. Yet, the time apart was incredibly difficult for Nessie and her owner.
Dog Alone in Ukraine
Members of the Kastus Kalinouski Battalion, a group from Belarus that’s fighting with Ukraine, found Nessie wandering the streets alone. They were in the city of Bucha, which was severely damaged by Russian troops. Nessie appeared to be a stray, and volunteers could tell she needed help.
Volunteers cared for the lonely canine, and they posted a photo of her on a social media platform called Telegram. After posting the image, they soon learned that Nessie had an owner looking for her. Nessie and her human had gotten separated when Russians began attacking Bucha.

So, the Kastus Kalinouski Battalion tracked down Nessie’s owner and set up a wonderful reunion with him. There is a lot of pain and heartbreak during these tough times in Ukraine, but this heartwarming moment between a man and his dog brought a little joy amid dark times.
Finally Together Again
Volunteers took a video of the man and dog’s reunion, and it’s just as incredible as you’d expect. In the video, Nessie instantly recognizes her human and runs to him, crying and howling in excitement. The two snuggle for a bit, but Nessie is so thrilled that she can’t sit still. She keeps running around and whining as if she can’t believe the wonderful moment is finally happening.
“We are fighting for the lives of not only humans but every animal,” the Kastus Kalinouski Battalion said in a statement.

As the war continues in Ukraine, this man and his dog will do everything they can to protect each other. The Russian invasion has been going on for about six weeks now, and no one knows what will happen next. Many dogs and humans are struggling to stay together during this time, so it’s touching to see that the members of the Kastus Kalinouski Battalion went to such lengths to keep Nessie safe.
