In the video, you hear a stern voice shout, “Go!” It’s hard to watch what comes next. A young man grabbed a Cavalier King Charles spaniel puppy around the waist. Then, he and another man held the puppy upside over a silver keg and forced him to drink. Meanwhile, college-aged boys looked on and cheered.

Inexcusable actions

We know that alcohol and dogs do not mix, but some students at Hofstra University in New York ignored the potentially harmful consequences. Members of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity held the dog upside down while pouring beer into the pup’s mouth. This stunt is called a keg stand.

A university spokeswoman said that the drinking incident took place off-campus. Hofstra suspended the fraternity while they investigate. The New York Post reported:

“The behavior seen on the video is unacceptable and in violation of the University’s Code of Community Standards,” the spokeswoman, Karla Schuster, said in a statement.

“The University has been in communication with Alpha Epsilon Pi International headquarters, as well as with chapter members regarding this off-campus incident. In accordance with University policy, the chapter has been placed on interim suspension pending an investigation.”

Another student in Long Island obtained the video. She posted it to her Twitter account and it went viral with over 100,000 views. New York’s Nassau County SPCA also saw the video. They decided to launch an investigation.

Gary Rogers, a spokesman for the Nassau County SPCA, told The Washington Post, “It was very wrong on so many levels. I’m sure it wasn’t the dog’s idea, ‘Hey, I want some beer.’ Animals don’t make that choice.” Thankfully, the SPCA checked on the dog and said it appears in good health.

In addition to its suspension from Hofstra, the fraternity’s national chapter is also looking into the matter. According to the Post, the frat said, “Alpha Epsilon Pi International has placed our chapter at Hofstra University on ‘cease and desist’ due to suspected violations of our health and safety policies.”

The twenty-one-year-old owner could face a misdemeanor charge for the torture of an animal.
