National Mutt Day is celebrated July 31st and December 2nd, but we say everyday is a good day to celebrate mutts! Or mixed-breed, All-American, and/or hybrid dogs. Whatever you call your furry best friend with mysterious background, we have the 10 reasons they RULE.
#1 – Unique
Can’t tell your neighbor’s four yellow labs apart? No one can say that about your mutt! Each and every one is unique and special.
#2 – Less Risk
Purebreds have a lot of health issues that stem from small gene pools and generations of close breedings. A mutt whose background boosts four or five different breeds has nice diluted genes, with less risk of inherited diseases.
#3 – Best of Everything
Want a low-shed dog but don’t like the look of a Poodle? Having a mixed-breed dog can give you exactly what you want, you just have to look.
#4 – Easy to Find
Why be stuck on a waiting list for years waiting for a purebred, when you can go to your local shelter and get a new best friend today? You will easily have your pick of size, color, age, and gender!
#5 – Affordable
Since adoption fees are so much lower than the price of a purebred dog, you can spend that “extra” money on things to spoil your dog with. Like a Louis Vuitton carrier, for example.
#6 – Versatile
With all those different genes, your mutt could excel at any or all of the dog sports. And now that AKC allows “All American Dogs” to compete in performance events, nothing is standing in your way.
#7 – Appreciative
That mutt you saved at the shelter will appreciate that you saved her from a life behind bars. She’ll return the favor with a lifetime of unconditional love.
#8 – Long Life
Denmark and North America have done studies showing that mixed-breed dogs tend to live longer than purebred dogs. So go ahead and adopt that older dog at the shelter, he’s got plenty of years left. Long live the Mutt!
#9 – Exponential Cuteness
That scruffy face looking at you through the bars of the shelter. Is it Brussels Griffon with a bit of Chihuahua? Maybe Lab and German Shepherd due to thos giant floppy ears and a dash of collie to give him that fluffy coat? Either way, it seems the more breeds mixed in, the cuter the dog becomes.
#10 – Conversation Starter
Trying to find a date or make friends? Mutts RULE as conversation starters. All you need is for someone to ask you what breed your dog is, and then bam! You can have a fun and lively discussion on what breeds he might be or definitely is not.
