Heavy rain pounded Oahu’s normally peaceful north shore through the night, turning quiet ranch land into a fast-moving flood zone where terrified horses stood trapped in rising water. As emergency warnings spread across the area, experienced rancher Tyler Smith feared the animals at Dillingham Ranch in Waialua would soon be completely overwhelmed by the dangerous conditions. Refusing to wait for help to arrive, Smith drove straight into the flooded property alone, knowing every minute mattered if the frightened horses were going to survive the storm and make it out safely.

Tyler Smith knew the storm was getting worse by the hour. After hearing government alerts warning about dangerous flooding, he drove toward Dillingham Ranch in Waialua, fearing the animals trapped there might not survive the night. What he found was far worse than he expected.
The paddocks were drowning under chest-high water. Horses stood stranded in the cold floodwaters with nowhere safe to go. The area was eerily quiet, adding to the fear and urgency of the moment.
“When I got there, it was definitely something I’ll never forget,” Smith told Hawaii Public Radio. “There’s nobody there. I drive up into a disaster scene that nobody knows about, starting off alone.”
As Smith pulled his truck through the gate, floodwater rushed into the vehicle’s footwell. The water was rising fast. Without hesitation, he climbed onto the horse he cared for and guided her through the dangerous current to safety.
But there were still many more horses trapped behind.
A Frightening Nighttime Rescue

Not long after Smith arrived, neighbors Kelsey and Levi rushed in with a backhoe to help. The massive machine became a lifeline in the flood, allowing the group to navigate deeper water that would have otherwise been impossible to cross safely.
The trio quickly began moving from paddock to paddock, searching for stranded animals and anyone else needing help.
At one flooded area, four of Levi’s horses stood huddled tightly together on a small patch of higher ground. Despite the terrifying conditions, the horses remained surprisingly calm once they recognized familiar faces approaching them with halters.
Smith and Levi carefully led the frightened animals through the floodwaters toward dry ground. Every successful rescue brought a moment of relief, but there was little time to celebrate. More horses were still trapped.
The rescue effort continued deep into the night. Armed with little more than halters, determination, and the power of the backhoe, the group managed to save all 15 horses from the flood.
At one point, panic nearly broke out when a frightened stallion became distressed. In dangerous situations like this, fear can quickly spread among horses, making rescues even more difficult. Thankfully, the rescuers stayed calm and steady, helping prevent chaos amid the floodwaters.
The horses seemed to sense they were being helped. Exhausted and soaked, they followed their rescuers toward safety step by step through the dark water.
Remarkably, veterinarians later confirmed that every single horse survived without injuries.
The rescue team’s work did not stop there.

After getting the horses to safety, Levi and Kelsey returned with the backhoe to help stranded neighbors throughout the flooded community. They pulled stuck vehicles from the water and rescued residents who had climbed onto rooftops to escape the rising flood.
What began as a desperate mission to save horses became a night of courage, teamwork, and compassion for an entire community. In the middle of disaster and darkness, strangers and neighbors came together to protect both animals and people, refusing to leave anyone behind.
