20 Best Hypoallergenic Shampoos for Yorkie’s with Itchy/Sensitive Skin

Wahl oatmeal essence is very good. I use their dirty beasty on my yorkie but she doesn’t have skin issues. I have found the best way to use dog shampoos is to put a small amount into an empty clean bottle then top it up with warm water and then use that on the dog it’s easier to get it through the coat and to rinse it off. Human shampoos have the wrong PH balance for dogs even baby shampoo is too strong for them.

An OTC oatmeal shampoo & if it doesn’t help, the Vet can prescribe a prescription shampoo. Bert’s Bees has a soothing spray for itching too.

Have you tried an oatmeal based shampoo? What about a conditioner? Yorkies have hair, not fur, so basically treat it like you would treat your hair. Use a good shampoo & condioner combo. I used Oster’s oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. Dusty’s hair was always soft and shiny. Also, try using a natural boars hair bristle brush. It helps to pull the natural oils out to keep his/her hair shiny and is more gentle than those dog brushes.

I have tried everything I think. Nothing works. You aren’t the only one. The vet told me that this year is very bad for dogs. My dog scratches the blood out of himself & I don’t know what to do. I started to get some of that stuff off the internet, but I read where a lot of people said it didn’t work. I bathed him in Dawn but that dries there skin if used too much. I guess we’ll just have to ride it out. The vet told me to use oatmeal shampoo. Seems to help a little. Good luck

Jax and Daisy. Works for a little bit but she ended up needing a shot from the vet. Every few months we go in. It stops all the itching pretty quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Yorkie Shampoos for Itchy & Sensitive Skin

  1. What causes Yorkies to have itchy or sensitive skin?
Yorkies are prone to skin sensitivities due to their fine, silky coat and delicate skin. Common causes include allergies (food or environmental), harsh grooming products, parasites, or underlying skin conditions like dermatitis.

  2. What ingredients should I look for in a Yorkie shampoo for sensitive skin?
Look for shampoos with gentle, soothing ingredients like oatmeal, aloe vera, chamomile, and coconut oil. These help reduce inflammation, moisturize the skin, and prevent further irritation. Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free formulas are also recommended.

  3. Are there any ingredients I should avoid in Yorkie shampoos?
Yes, avoid shampoos containing sulfates, parabens, alcohol, artificial fragrances, or dyes. These can strip natural oils and worsen irritation in sensitive Yorkie skin.

  4. How often should I bathe my Yorkie if they have sensitive skin?
Generally, bathing your Yorkie every 3 to 4 weeks is sufficient. Overbathing can dry out their skin, but infrequent washing can lead to buildup and discomfort. Always follow your vet’s advice for specific conditions.

  5. Can I use human shampoo on my Yorkie?
No, human shampoos—even baby formulas—can disrupt your Yorkie’s skin pH balance and cause irritation. Always use dog-specific shampoos that are formulated for their skin type.

  6. What are some top-rated shampoos for Yorkies with itchy skin?
Popular choices among Yorkie owners include Earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo, Burt’s Bees for Dogs Oatmeal Shampoo, and Vet’s Best Hypo-Allergenic Dog Shampoo. These are known for their natural ingredients and skin-soothing properties.

  7. Can a shampoo really help with my Yorkie’s skin allergies?
Yes, while it won’t cure allergies, the right shampoo can provide relief by calming inflammation, removing allergens from the coat, and supporting skin healing. Pairing it with dietary and environmental adjustments often yields the best results.
