The 10 Best Small Dogs For Kids

| Published on October 20, 2017

Are you thinking about getting a dog for your family, but you’re worried about getting one that won’t tolerate your children? While larger dogs are less fragile and less likely to be accidentally injured, there are some small breeds that do well with children. Keeping in mind that dogs don’t come with guarantees and any dog needs training, here are 10 small dog breeds that do well with kids.

#1 – Beagle

The Beagle is a friendly, happy dog with short hair. They do need a lot of exercise, but much of this can be provided by playing with the kids. Beagles are scent hounds and tend to follow their nose, so your backyard should have a solid fence to prevent them from wandering off.

#2 – Maltese

Bred to be companion dogs, the Maltese makes a great addition to families. While these tiny dogs may be snappy or get injured by toddlers, they adore older kids. The Maltese gets by with short walks outside and brief runs inside your house.

#3 – Bichon Frise

Bichons do great with children because they are playful and have lots of energy. They were bred to be companions. The AKC describes them as being a “cheerful” breed. Their curly hair needs regular brushing to avoid painful mats.

#4 – Pug

The Pug loves kids and is sturdy enough to avoid being easily injured by rambunctious children. They’re strong-willed but rarely aggressive. Pugs have low exercise needs and little grooming. They are prone to overheating.

#5 – Toy or Miniature Poodle

Unlike Standard Poodles, toys and miniatures are bred primarily for companionship. As the second-smartest dog breed in the world, they are easily trained. They may not have the patience for young children but make a great pet for older kids.

#6 – Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavaliers are affectionate, playful, patient, and eager to please, making them great family pets. They have only moderate exercise needs and are happiest being with their people. This cuddly breed is often used as a therapy dog and would do well comforting upset kids.

#7 – Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkies have a large dog personality in a tiny body. They do best with older children since they may not have the patience to deal with toddlers. They are very intelligent and easy to train, though they may become yappy.

#8 – Miniature Schnauzer

Schnauzers are very playful and easy to train. They need a lot of exercise and something to keep their mind busy. They do have a high prey drive and are likely to chase just about anything smaller than themselves.

#9 – Shetland Sheepdog

The sheltie is eager to please and wants to work hard. They have a lot of energy and may use that energy to herd children if not given a more appropriate outlet. They are extremely intelligent and easy to train.

#10 – Boston Terrier

The “American Gentleman,” Bostons are happy-go-lucky and are easily trained. They are generally quiet if trained well as a puppy. They love being around people, though they can become territorial. Their short coat needs minimal grooming.
