3 Things All Golden Retriever Owners Should Know

| January 7, 2017

One of the reasons Golden Retrievers are such a nice dog to own is that they are fairly easy to maintain. They don’t require extreme grooming or to go on 10-mile runs every day. They are also fairly easy to socialize and train. However, this doesn’t mean they don’t have any special needs at all. The following are 3 things all Golden Retriever owners should know.

#1 – Those Ears Need Cleaning

One of the biggest issues Golden owners come across are those floppy ears. They are a great environment for bacteria to grow or for thistles and burrs to get embedded down inside. Routine checking and cleaning of a Golden’s ears is mandatory for their health and well-being.

#2 – They Will Not Grow Out Of Putting Things In Their Mouth

This is not just a puppy or teething phase for the Golden Retriever, who was bred to retriever objects. The “soft mouth” is taught by the hunter, so your Golden will put things in his mouth and not necessarily be soft about it. They can easily destroy furniture, kid’s toys, your favorite leather shoes, etc. If you don’t do proper training and management (like not leaving things where your Golden can get them), be prepared for a lifetime of destruction via chewing.

#3 – They Don’t Like To Be Alone

Golden Retrievers are a social breed that want to be with you. As a hunting dog, a Golden would have spent a good part of the day at his owner’s side. They like to be right with you. (Like, right next you!) Given the opportunity, your 70-pound Golden will be in your lap at any time. So be prepared to spend lots of quality time together if you are getting a Golden!
