3 Things All Rottweiler Owners Should Know

| February 8, 2017

Like humans, all dogs are different. However, within breeds there are certain similarities in looks, temperament and health issues. Aside from basic dog care, every owner should know the special traits about their breed and the needs that may go along with those. The following are three things all Rottweiler owners should know.

#1 – They Are Big Babies

Rottweilers might have a rap as being a “tough junk yard dog,” but they are actually very sensitive. They get anxious and stressed fairly easily and are sensitive when it comes to training methods. Owners should take this into account when choosing a trainer.

#2 – They Are Needy

Probably no surprise that this sensitive dog needs to be with his people. They are prone to separation anxiety, and it’s important for owners of Rotties to understand this and know how to prevent and/or deal with it should their Rottweiler develop it.

#3 – Socialization Is NOT An Option

Bred to be a farm dog, Rottweilers have a strong desire to watch out for their family and their home. This means that an un-socialized Rottweiler that never leaves his backyard, will mostly likely not be friendly towards strangers and other animals. In order to have a friendly Rottie, socialization that includes positive experiences around other people, places, and animals is a necessity.
