There are valid reasons for having to give up a dog. An owner may become seriously ill and be unable to care for their dog. There may be a job loss and the tough decision needs to be made on whether they can still afford to take care of their dog. The arrival of a new baby may stress the dog out so much that an owner will have to decide whether the dog may be better off in a home with no kids. Life occasionally gets the upper hand; a responsible, caring, compassionate owner will put the dog’s needs above their own. It is the ignorant ones, people who shouldn’t even consider owning a dog that will be highlighted. Below are 4 of the most inane reasons given for relinquishing a dog and the happy outcomes. These “owners” actually did their dog a favor by giving them up.
Snuggle Puppy
She was a shelter favorite; loved by all for her calm demeanor and easy going attitude. Completely laid back the staff wondered why no one adopted this awesome dog. All she wanted were belly scratches and to curl up in the closest lap available, she was 100 pounds of pure snuggles. It was a day to rejoice when a family came in and chose her. With seven kids in tow, they all descended on her and gave her the love she craved. Unfortunately she was back at the shelter within a week. The reason given; the two year old hugged her too much. Two weeks later and active couple came in looking for a hiking buddy. They were instantly smitten with the snuggle bug and adopted her on the spot. Not only will this big girl get the love she craves, she’ll also get out and hike in the great outdoors.
Humping Jack Flash
A mischievous dog was brought in to the shelter. His owner’s arm was fully extended, allowing the leash pulled out in front of him. It looked as if the owner were following something tainted and stinky. Throwing the leash across the desk he claimed he needed to get rid of this dog. When asked why, the owner said that the dog was homosexual, it went against the owners beliefs and he couldn’t live with something so immoral. Apparently this little guy liked to mount other male dogs and hadn’t been neutered. The dog stayed at the shelter for a couple of months before getting snatched up by a couple who lived on a farm. At the last update the staff was told he had befriended a pig and they were very happy together.
The Dynamic Duo
A well groomed woman brought in an oversized travel crate and set it on the counter. The woman explained that her father had gone into a nursing home several months prior, she agreed to care for the dogs until he got released. Unfortunately he passed away. The intake member peered into the stink filled crate and saw two sets of bulging eyes stare back at her out of squishy faces. The father and son cowered at the back of their crate. It was then revealed that the daughter had not let them out of their crate in the six months they lived with her. Several months of careful socialization and training, these two scared dogs became delightfully playful and active. They found their forever home within days of hitting the adoption floor. An older gentleman was happy to find them, he had recently lost his beloved companion of the same breed. He took them home, together.
Midnight Cowboy
There were a litter of puppies born in the shelter and quickly adopted as soon as they came of age. Six months later one of them came back. The reason being, the dog enjoyed raiding the kitchen at night and the owners were tired of cleaning up the mess every morning. He was also becoming “out of control”. No, training wasn’t an option; dogs should know how to behave. The staff trainer took an interest and began assessing the dog. She quickly realized this was one smart cookie. After working with the dog for a couple weeks, a few phone calls were made. The dog was adopted out by a Special Forces group who trains highly intelligent dogs to sniff out bombs for the military.
