The Humane Society Of The United States is leading the mission in relocating 4,000 Beagles rescued from an animal research facility. After the facility was found to be guilty of shocking violations to the Animal Welfare Act, the organization was ordered to release all 4,000 dogs to the care of the HSUS.
While it may be shocking to many, there are Beagles located in labs throughout the country for the purpose of medical research. These labs cover everything from pharmaceutical to nutritional research, and Beagles are often used due to their sweet and docile nature. It is completely legal as long as these facilities abide by regulations enforced by the USDA.
These Beagles were rescued from the Envigo facility in Virginia, which was found to be in violation of several animal welfare regulations. Some of the violations included euthanizing dogs for simple medical conditions instead of treating them, denying food to nursing mothers, giving dogs food contaminated with mold and maggots, and even allowing over 20 beagle puppies to die from cold exposure.
This facility was not leading any research, but rather holding the dogs before shipping them to various research labs throughout the country. Thankfully for the many beagles in this facility, they were rescued before they were forced to endure such a terrible fate.
The lawsuit against the research facility was filed in May, and they were ordered to release all the dogs within 60 days. This gave the Humane Society enough time to figure out a game plan.
“Finding partners who can make space and find homes for around 4,000 dogs in the summer—a time of year when animal shelters already are over-capacity—will be a feat of epic proportions. We are ready to take on the challenge and are grateful to our rescue and shelter partners.” HSUS
Kindness Ranch, Homeward Trails, and Priceless Pets are just a few of the rescues that have stepped up to offer housing and eventual adoption to the many rescued beagle pups. They’ve shared so many beautiful photos of the dogs enjoying their freedom since their shocking rescue, each of which looks so grateful to finally experience love.
A handful of the Beagles have already been adopted and welcomed into the forever home they always deserved. Dog lovers around the country are shocked by what these pups have been through, and many have vowed to play a direct role in brightening their futures.
“These cuties enjoyed a bubble bath and massage followed by an afternoon of frolicking in the yard, cuddle time in our Peace Out rooms, frozen kongs and cool nap time. Oh how it feels great to be FREE to be a DOG! For dogs that have spent their entire lives in a kennel, these cuties are truly embracing life and love.” – Homeward Trails Rescue
90% of drugs that pass the animal research point will ultimately fail when they make it to human trials. This is because animals are not always an accurate indicator of how medications will affect the human body, proving just how outdated and unnecessary animal testing is.
“Continued reliance on animal testing discourages innovation, perpetuates animal suffering and can ultimately lead to human suffering due to high drug failure rates.” – HSUS
We are so thankful for the many dedicated animal rescuers that made it their mission to save these pups. We can’t wait to watch each and every Beagle find the loving home they deserve!
