5 Signs Your Rottweiler Is Stressed

| November 14, 2016

Rottweilers have a reputation for being big, tough dogs. They are depicted in movies as one of the “junk yard dogs.” However, those that own them know they are really big softies at heart and, just like any dog, can easily get stressed or worried about things in his environment. Knowing when your Rottie is feeling like this will make you a better dog owner. The following are some of the big signs your Rottweiler is feeling stressed or anxious.

#1 – Whale Eye

“Whale eye” is when your dog’s eyes bulge and the white around the iris is visible. This is a definite sign that your Rottie is stressed or anxious.

#2 – Panting

Rottweilers who are stressed will pant excessively, no matter the temperature. If you have ruled out heat, than most likely your Rottie is worried about something.

#3 – Lip Licking

Your Rottie may lip lick and yawn when he is stressed. It’s usually a slower lip lick than when they are tasting something good. It can also look like a “flick” where the tongue comes out and goes back in without actually licking their lips.

#4 – Taking Treats Hard

If you train using positive reinforcement (or just happen to be feeding him) and your Rottweiler is taking the food harder than he normally does, this is a sign of stress. You may even get bit by accident as your dog takes his nervous tension out on the food. This is a definite sign you need to change the environment.

#5 – Whining

A stressed Rottie will often whine. If yours is whining and you know he doesn’t have to go outside to go potty, he may be stressed. He may also bark.
