7 Secrets That Help Minimize Dog Dander

| Published on June 14, 2018

Whether you have a family member who is allergic to your dog or you just like a really clean home, dog dander can be a big problem. What can you do to help reduce your dog’s dander to help keep your home clean and allergen free? Luckily, we have some solutions. Here are 7 secrets that help minimize dog dander.

#1 – Brush your dog regularly

Brushing your dog helps loosen up dander and spread your dog’s natural oils. Brush your dog outside, if possible, to prevent dander that gets brushed out from accumulating in your home. Brushing your long-haired dog also helps prevent mats, which can trap your dog’s dander. Grooming gloves are perfect for spreading the oils and removing loose hair from your short-haired dog.

#2 – Bathe your dog often – but not too often

Bathing your dog helps remove dander, but washing your dog too often can dry out his skin and ultimately cause more dander than what your dog started with. Bathe your dog at least once a month but no more than once a week with a gentle, hypoallergenic shampoo for best results. Make sure you rinse every last bit of shampoo out of your pup because shampoo residue can cause your dog to itch and release more dander.

#3 – Use grooming wipes between baths

Grooming wipes are a gentle, safe way to remove dander from your dog in between baths. Try our Project Paws ™ Aloe & Oatmeal Grooming/Bath Wipes for a gentle way to minimize your dog’s dander.

#4 – Clip your long-haired dog’s coat short

Long hair traps dander, so keeping your dog in a short haircut can help you easily remove the dander from your dog’s coat instead of letting it collect in his fur.

#5 – Use an air purifier

An air purifier with a HEPA filter placed in the room your dog spends the most time in can help reduce how much dander floats around in your home. Vacuuming regularly with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter can also help reduce dander.

#6 – Feed a good diet

Cheap commercial dog foods are like McDonald’s – sure, it’ll keep you alive, but it’s going to cause health problems in the long run. Feeding your dog a higher-quality food can have many positive health benefits for your dog, not the least of which is helping to improve dry skin.

#7 – Give your dog supplements

Supplements like coconut oil and those containing omega-3 fatty acids can greatly improve the condition of your dog’s skin, leading to healthier skin that produces less dander.

Omega-3 has a variety of health benefits such as supporting skin and coat health, joint health, heart health, immune system health, cellular health, and brain and eye development and maintenance.
