Lethargy

Some dogs are inherently lazy, but you may notice it to be more extreme than usual. Lethargy is a very common sign that your dog is not feeling well. And who can blame him? You don’t want to do much when you’re sick either. If the lethargy lasts more than a few hours, you should probably take him in for a check-up. Lethargy is a symptom of many ailments, some minor and others very serious.

Lack of Appetite

Most of our dogs will eat to their hearts’ content. However, just like humans, when they have an upset stomach, they typically don’t want to eat. If you notice your dog seems uninterested in his food, and especially his favorite treats, it’s time to make sure there isn’t any larger underlying problem.

Vomiting

Vomiting is a sign that something isn’t right in your dog’s digestive tract. This may be because she ate something she shouldn’t have, but it’s not something that should continue. Just like diarrhea, frequent vomiting is typically a sign that something more serious is going on. Be sure to make a vet appointment to ensure that your pup is better in no time.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea happens, especially in dogs. They can get into all sorts of things we would never dream of eating. However, it can also be a symptom of numerous gastric ailments, from parasites to cancer. So make sure to take your pet in for an exam if he’s having diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two.

Excessive Thirst

A suddenly thirsty dog can be an indicator of a number of issues, such as diabetes, Cushing’s syndrome and Addison’s disease. If you’re finding yourself filling your dog’s water bowl up constantly throughout the day, it’s time to make an appointment.

Frequent Urination

Frequent urination can be caused by a number of things, including diabetes and urinary tract infections. If you notice your pet has to urinate frequently, or is straining or having accidents in the house, it’s likely time for a trip to the vet to make sure your pup is healthy. While urination in the house can often be a training issue, it’s very important to make sure there are no underlying illnesses.

Pale Gums

Pale mucous membranes are almost a definite sign of illness. If you notice any other symptoms in your dog, check the color of his gums. The dog in this photo has nice, pink gums. If you notice they are pale, be sure to check with your veterinarian. Pale gums can be the sign of anemia, low blood pressure, low body temperature, and even internal bleeding. On the contrary, bright red gums can indicate fever and infection.
