Shirley Zindler is an animal control officer. She’s also the author of the book ‘The Secret Life of Dog Catchers’ which tells about her experiences when she rescues animals. She wrote the Secret Life of Dog Catchers to chronicle her adventures as an animal control officer and to raise funds for animal causes.
Recently, Shirley encountered another dog who needed her help. And this one, like the other dogs she has rescued, had a pretty rough start. It all started when Shirley received a call from a concerned resident in Sonoma County, CA, telling her that she’s been hearing noises from inside a large tree. A small dog seems to be living inside the tree.

When Shirley got to the scene she found a Chihuahua living inside the tree. The Chihuahua went in the small gap at the bottom of the tree. And from there, she could go all the way up inside. It took a lot of patience from the two animal control officers to get the poor dog out of the tree.

The dog was scared. After being abandoned there, who wouldn’t be? She was so terrified that she tried to defend herself by nipping at her rescuers.

After they got her out, they named her Boo. She was bathed and then fed. Her handlers noticed that she was scared and very timid. It’s like she was terrified of the world, thinking they’re out there to get her.

Shirley looked after Boo, socializing her and getting her accustomed to people. She’s still a little reluctant about people handling her, but she sure is making some progress. She’s learning some social skills from Shirley’s dogs.

Shirley loves Boo, but she couldn’t keep her since she already has four dogs. And she also wants a space in case another foster dog may need her help.
Boo needs a home and a family who is very understanding and patient. She needs someone who understands her case, and who won’t expect her to become incredibly sociable overnight.
