These stories always get me – someone stops whatever it is they need to be doing (work, driving to an appointment, etc.) to help an animal in need. I dare you to watch this video without getting teary-eyed!
Michigan Humane Society Officer Chris Oewerkerk is dispatched to disturbing call in the city of Detroit: a puppy lodged deep in a drain pipe that has been constantly crying all night, according to the owner of the house he was stuck under. The puppy’s mother was inside the house, also crying all night.
“There was no sign of the puppy, but we could hear it,” says Oewerkerk, who arrived on the scene at 8:30am after receiving a voice message about the stuck pup.
After assessing the situation, it was clear that this was more than a simple rescue. Plumbers, Diggers and Humane Officers joined forces to try and save the puppy.
People were told to “stop what they were doing and get down there as fast as they could to help.” He was six feet down and they feared he would be dead before they could get to him.
They put a camera in the pipe to see if they could spot the puppy – he was still way out of reach.
Aaron Excavating Incorporated brought in their backhoe to try and get the puppy free.
Finally, after several hours they hear the puppy and he is close – about three feet back in the pipe – and with one final cut on the pipe, rescuers are able to reach in and get the puppy out!
Aside from being cold, the puppy seems no worse for wear and is reunited with his mother and litter mates.
