Owner Creates Petition To Save His Dog From A Death Sentence For Killing Chickens

Just like most dogs, Sophie, a 1-year-old Husky, loves to chase other animals. However, when Sophie slipped out of her house, chased and killed the neighbor’s chickens, she now faces a death sentence. Her owners, Noelle Linder and Anthony Maguire have created a petition and have gathered 17,000 signatures to save her.

It all happened in Elbert County, Colorado. Sophie accidentally slipped out from her collar, ran out of their yard, and went to chase the neighbor’s chickens. Soon after that, the couple Noelle and Anthony, heard 12 gunshots fired. They quickly went outside to investigate, and there they saw something so horrible–their dog Sophie, choking on her own blood.

Sophie was shot four times in the neck and the hind leg. The owner of the chickens claimed that his birds were enclosed in his land and that Sophie killed four of them. And when Anthony tried to pick up Sophie, the guy threatened to shoot him as well. All the couple could do was watch Sophie struggle and fight for her life while they wait for the police to arrive.

And since the law in Elbert County specifically states that any dog who kills a domestic animal must be euthanized–Sophie has now been sentenced to death. Sophie’s owners created a petition and gathered signatures to persuade the D.A. to spare her dog.

Here’s the email Douglas Bechtel, DA of Elbert County, sent to me on August 20th highlighting what will be done to Sophie. Note that the DA Douglas highlighted all of these parts.

Noelle Linder also faces 6 months in jail as she was issued a summons for “unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog”.

According to the news report by CBS Denver, the chicken owners claimed that this was not the first time that Sophie has attacked and killed their animals. But Sophie’s owners says that these claims are not true.

For now, Sophie’s fate lies on the District Attorney’s decision.
