Canine tracheobronchitis, commonly referred to as “kennel cough,” is a highly contagious respiratory infection that causes inflammation in the trachea and bronchi. It is very prevalent among dogs kept in close proximity – hence the name kennel cough.

Young dogs, seniors, and pregnant bitches are the most affected by the disease because of their underdeveloped or weakened immune system, but any dog can suffer from tracheobronchitis at any time.

Here’s everything you need to know to protect your dog from this miserable illness.

The Warning Signs

Kennel Cough is a worldwide pestilence, almost every dog has it as least once in their lives. Common places dogs “catch” the disease are dog parks, dog beaches, and doggy daycares, where they are interacting with a bunch of dogs, sharing water, etc. Also, boarding a dog can cause stress, which weakens the immune system, making them more susceptible. If you see any of the below signs, take your dog to the vet immediately. The sooner you get him antibiotics, the quicker he will get better.

  • Lethargy
  • Coughing
  • Running nose
  • Fever
  • Loss of Appetite

How to Prevent Kennel Cough

The Bordatella vaccine that your veterinarian recommends your dog get every 6months to a year can help prevent some strains of kennel cough. However, just like the human flu virus, there are many strains, and the vaccine can only prevent against some.

Keep your dog’s immunity system healthy. There are many immunity supplements you can give your dog to help boost their immune system. If you have a dog with a weaker immune system, they should probably be on a supplement permanently. Of, if your dog is fairly healthy but you are planning on boarding them for a while or are going to a big show, you may not want help boost their system with a supplement. Just remember supplements take time to work, so don’t assume that because you gave it to your dog a day before they board, they will be fine.

Making sure your dog gets enough rest and exercise, so they stay in shape but are not overly tired (especially for puppies), can help prevent illness. If your puppy is so tired in the morning it doesn’t want to go for its morning walk, don’t make him. Instead, let him sleep – his immune system might be fighting something.

IF your dog stresses a lot when you leave them at a boarding facility, consider in-home pet sitter instead. Reducing the amount of stress your leaving causes your dog, will keep them healthier. In-home pet sitting also prevents the spread of kennel cough since your dog is not coming into contact with dozens of other dogs.

Be aware of what is happening in your neighborhood. Is there a bout of kennel cough going around? Have several dogs at the dog park fallen ill? Has there been cases at your daycare or boarding place? If so, do not take your dog there for several weeks.

There is no way to completely prevent kennel cough. However, you can help reduce the risk by following these simple tips. Remember to take your dog to the vet right away if you see any of the symptoms, or if your dog just doesn’t seem herself.
