10 Dog Breeds Perfect For Colder Climates

Do you live in the mountains and worry a Chihuahua might freeze? Or maybe you are a Snow Bunny looking for a dog that will enjoy the snow as much as you? These 10 breeds may be your best bet when it comes to loving cold weather – they are made for it!

#1 – Alaskan Malamute

Of course this breed had to top the list. Made for sledding in the Alaskan winters, this breed can run for days and can certainly keep you company on the slopes.

#2 – Siberian Husky

A close second, the Husky is another breed bred for sledding. He will be happy running around in the snow, whether you are skijoring, sledding, or building a snowman.

#3 – St. Bernard

This amazing dog was used to locate freezing and missing people in the Swiss Alps during snow storms. A truly incredible breed that can handle anything winter throws at the two of you.

#4 – Samoyed

Developed in Siberia, you can bet this dog is made for the cold. Another all-around dog, you can sled, skijor, or just have fun with this hardy breed.

#5 – Bernese Mountain Dog

Said to “thrive in cold weather,” the Berner is a large, loveable dog that will happily lay by the lodge fire or trudge through the snow.

#6 – American Eskimo Dog

This cute white “fluff ball” has a nice thick double coat making it suitable for the cold climate (though they have nothing to do with the Eskimo culture!). Just don’t lose them in deep snow; you may want a bright or light up collar to make them move visible.

#7 – Newfoundland

Bred for water work including retrieving fisherman’s nets, he has a thick coat to protect him from icy waters. This makes him the perfect cold weather companion and you will love his sweet personality.

#8 – Swedish Lapphund

This rare breed (only 1200 in the world) is an all-around farm dog in his native home of Sweden. He has a nice thick coat and is bred for cold; being used as a year-round hunting companion and a herder of reindeer.

#9 – Keeshond

Another Northern breed, originally popular in Holland, this dog has tons of coat to keep him toasty on a chilly day. His happy personality will keep you company on cold nights too.

#10 – Estrela Mountain Dog

Bred in the isolated Serra Da Estrela (what is now Portugal), this breed was made to withstand harsh climates, making them a perfect mountain buddy. He can even carry your pack if you choose to do some hiking or snowshoeing.
