The St. Plus X High School had their practice at a new location when something unusual happened. A stray dog showed up, and he quickly bonded with some of the team members. The innocent Pit Bull thought everyone was his friend, so he wandered over to a nearby yard to play with some dogs. But sadly, those dogs didn’t want to be friends, and they attacked him.
The stray dog might’ve died if the rugby team members hadn’t rushed to the rescue. He had a look of defeat in his eyes, but when humans came to save him, he saw a glimmer of hope for the first time in a while.
High Schoolers to the Rescue
Rugby team member Grant Stringfellow explained that they knew the dog was a stray because he was dirty and searching for food. Yet, despite his rough shape, he was very friendly to the high schoolers. They decided to call him Buster.
Then, another team member named Burke Battenfield recalled how Buster wandered away to make friends with two other dogs. The dogs were chained up in a yard, and there was no fence around the house. Instead of playing with Buster, the two dogs attacked him, leaving him helpless.
“He had no idea what to do. He looked like he was just waiting to die,” Stringfellow said.
So, the rugby players worked together to come to his rescue. Player Hayden Llorens grabbed a blanket out of his truck while Battenfield grabbed a bowl of water. They comforted Buster as he bled severely, and they posted photos of his condition to beg for help. Then, they rushed Buster to a 24-hour emergency vet.
Welcome to the Team!
The students’ dedication touched the Animal Justice League, so they started fundraising to cover Buster’s medical care. However, it would be difficult for them to take in Buster without a foster home lined up. Luckily, Stringfellow’s family agreed to foster the dog without hesitation.
“What they did for him is going to be an experience they’re going to take with them for the rest of their lives. They are going to know the reward they get out of helping someone,” David Selby, Varsity Rugby Team Coach, said about the team.
Now, Buster is like a mascot for the rugby team. They’ve posted several photos of him in a jersey next to the final score of their games. Lately, the team has had a lot of success, so Buster is like their good luck charm!
Animal Justice League has been posting regular updates on Buster’s health. After a month, he’s looking healthier and happier than ever. It’s unclear if he will go up for adoption soon or if someone he knows will adopt him, but either way, he’s such a lucky pup. He’s surrounded by so many humans who love and support him!
