Opossums are nocturnal creatures, so they cross roads at night which unfortunately makes them more susceptible to being hit by cars. One opossum who met this fate had her baby clinging to her side when she was found. If the baby hadn’t been saved, he would’ve died too.

The rescue team delivered the baby opossum, now known as Poncho, to a veterinarian for specialized treatment. However, he was healthy and thriving despite the fact that he had no mother to look after him, which is when the real tale began.

Hantu, a white German Shepherd, didn’t have any puppies of her own but welcomed Ponch into her life as if he were one. They needed each other and quickly became best friends; it’s amazing to see them together.

Poncho would cling to Hantu’s back, just as she did with her real mother. Three years later, nothing has ever changed. Even though Poncho has grown much larger from when she was rescued, she still rides on Hantu’s back during their wonderful walks.

The two of them are now enjoying life together at Rare Species Fund in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which was established to provide funding to wildlife conservation programs. Poncho and Hantu are helping RSF do its part to help educate people to appreciate the wealth of their wildlife diversity. It’s relationships like this that give us hope about how we can all get along in this wonderful world.
