My Yorkie has been on Taste of the Wild since she was a puppy. That is what the breeder fed her. She is almost 11 1/2 and is active and eats well. It is a dry food in a small kibble. She loves it! We also had a Yorkie who passed away a couple of years ago who also ate TOTW, and he was one month shy of his 17th birthday when he passed away.

Pepper liked pedigree. Favorite was beef and sometimes I would mix it with hard food. Can’t remember the dog food, help him to keep a little weight on him. Plus the hard food was good for his teeth, just mixed little hard food. He liked it, always kept a little out for him till he got older.

Hello! I’m an RVT in California and have been working in veterinary medicine for 8+ years now and LOVEEEE Royal Canin Yorkie blend. Yorkie are by far my favorite breed and I recommend the breed specific diets all the time. If I wasn’t going to do the breed specific diet, I also LOVE and swear by Hills Science Diet. My current dog is on their sensitive skin/stomach formula.

The more natural the better. I’d avoid all kibble. I’m on freshpet, works great for tear stains, nutrients, and actually appealing to the dog. A raw diet is another good alternative if your dog is willing to eat it.

I switched from Blue Buffalo to Merrick. I would recommend either. I feed my 15 y/o Yorkie Blue for 14 years. Got a rescue that didn’t like Blue. Transition them both to Merrick. Both are flourishing. Healthy poops and coat is shines and thick. No allergies so far.

I’m not sure about dog food, but I am sure that cooking chicken fresh every other day for my dog has worked. He’s 16 years old. He can’t hear and he’s got Cataracts, but he runs up to the dog walk. He sleeps all night and he’s very healthy he’s never been overweight and he’s so sweet as can be. I didn’t know how I was going to do it but for 16 years I have cooked chicken for him every other day so he has fresh now I have to grind it because he hasn’t got many teeth left

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Yorkie Puppy Foods
-
What should I look for in the best Yorkie puppy food?
Look for high-quality puppy food that includes real meat as the first ingredient, balanced levels of protein and fat for growth, DHA for brain development, and small kibble size suitable for Yorkies’ tiny mouths. Avoid foods with artificial additives or fillers. -
How often should I feed my Yorkie puppy?
Yorkie puppies should be fed 3 to 4 small meals per day to maintain their blood sugar levels and support their rapid metabolism. As they grow older, you can gradually reduce the number of meals to two per day. -
Is dry or wet food better for Yorkie puppies?
Dry food (kibble) is generally better for dental health and portion control, while wet food can be more palatable and hydrating. Many Yorkie owners opt for a mix of both to provide variety and ensure nutritional balance. -
Are grain-free diets good for Yorkie puppies?
Grain-free diets can be beneficial for Yorkie puppies with grain sensitivities or allergies, but they are not necessary for every puppy. Always consult your vet before switching to a grain-free option, especially due to ongoing research about its link to heart health in dogs. -
Can Yorkie puppies eat homemade food?
Yes, but homemade meals must be carefully planned to meet all of your Yorkie puppy’s nutritional needs. A vet or canine nutritionist should help formulate a balanced recipe to ensure your puppy gets the proper vitamins and minerals. -
What ingredients should I avoid in Yorkie puppy food?
Avoid foods containing by-products, artificial colors or flavors, corn syrup, excessive salt, and chemical preservatives like BHA or BHT. These can be harmful or offer little nutritional value. -
When should I switch my Yorkie from puppy food to adult food?
Most Yorkies can transition to adult food between 9 and 12 months of age. Make the switch gradually over 7–10 days to avoid digestive upset and monitor their reaction to the new food.
As always, be sure to consult your veterinarian before making any health changes to your yorkie’s food. iHeartDogs is reader supported, so some of the links above may be affiliate links where we receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.
