Here’s a simple fact: Pets don’t live long enough. But as dog parents, we understand they leave with us with lasting memories and a special place in our hearts. While life is challenging, one of the hardest experiences for any pet owner is the loss of a cherished companion. People find different ways to cope with this deep sadness. Some choose to reflect on the happy memories they shared, while others decide to honor their pet by helping other animals. One anonymous individual came up with a touching way to both remember their dog and bring joy to other local pets.

A woman in Newport, Rhode Island, came across something unexpected during a visit to the beach: a wooden box brimming with yellow tennis balls. Upon closer inspection, she saw a sign attached to the box that explained its purpose. The box wasn’t just filled with tennis balls—it was a tribute to a beloved dog named Piper Harden, who had passed away. The sign read, “Piper Harden 2006-2021.”

Piper had been a dog who had crossed the rainbow bridge, and her owner had set up the box in a very special place that held fond memories for them both. The beach had been Piper’s favorite spot to run freely, play fetch, and bark at the waves. A black-and-white photo of Piper on the beach was also part of the memorial, adding a personal touch.

In honor of all the joyful moments Piper had at the beach, her owner decided to spread that happiness to other dogs and their owners. The box full of tennis balls was there for anyone to take and enjoy.

Merida is a senior who was found abandoned in a backyard with her sibling who had passed away. She was left to fend for herself as an 11-year-old with diabetes. Thankfully, Kanoa Rescue Foundation stepped in to save her, but she still needs your help!

“Please help yourself to a tennis ball for your dog to play with,” the owner’s note invited. “Keep it or drop it back in the box for another dog to enjoy. Love this time with your pup and enjoy this day you have together.”

Losing a pet often brings back memories of the simple, joyful moments—like a game of fetch.
