One morning, around 9 a.m., the team at Great Plains SPCA (GPSPCA) received an urgent message from a local resident. The Good Samaritan had come across an abandoned crate at an intersection in Shawnee, Kansas, and was horrified to find 11 tiny puppies trapped inside. Unsure of how long the puppies had been left there, the concerned individual knew they were in immediate danger. The crate was left on a busy road with no protection from the looming storm.
“They were found just before a massive downpour hit our area,” Victoria Roland-Vaughn, GPSPCA’s social media coordinator, shared with The Dodo. “They had no shelter, no food, or water, and they were at risk on a fairly busy street.” Refusing to let the puppies suffer any longer, the Good Samaritan quickly gathered them and brought them to the safety of the GPSPCA shelter.
While the staff was relieved to see the puppies safe, they were immediately concerned about the health risks. These 6-week-old pups were extremely vulnerable, and the shelter already had other animals, including those battling illnesses like parvo, on-site.
“For their own safety, we couldn’t risk keeping more young dogs here,” explained Roland-Vaughn. “We had to act quickly to avoid exposing them to any sickness.”
The team posted an urgent plea for foster homes on social media and placed the puppies in a shared kennel, away from the sick animals. After enduring such a terrifying ordeal, the exhausted puppies fell asleep almost immediately upon realizing they were finally safe.
“They were filthy and so tired, but they snuggled up and drifted off to sleep,” the shelter shared in a Facebook post. Soon, something wonderful happened: overnight, six of the puppies were taken in by loving foster families. The remaining five, however, were still hoping for a place to go. They eagerly greeted every person passing by, hoping to catch someone’s eye.
A few hours later, the last five puppies were also placed in foster homes, allowing the entire litter to rest and recover. The GPSPCA team was overjoyed. “Our community really came through in a big way,” said Roland-Vaughn. “It was a tremendous relief to know they were all safe.”
For the next three weeks, the puppies will stay in foster care until they’re old enough to be spayed or neutered and ready for adoption. In the meantime, the little ones are thriving, spending their days playing and napping.
“They’re blossoming into the happiest puppies, despite the fear they once faced,” added Roland-Vaughn. “It’s amazing how quickly they’ve bounced back.”
Thanks to the quick action of a kind stranger and the dedication of the GPSPCA community, these puppies now have a chance at a bright and loving future.
The man responsible is facing felony charges but must never be allowed to own or care for animals again.
