Abandoned animals are a heartbreaking reality that animal rescuers, volunteers, and officers encounter all too often. However, a recent discovery in New Bern, North Carolina, proved to be particularly unsettling. This case stood out not only because of the puppy left behind but also due to the troubling note found alongside him. The situation unfolded near the Books-A-Million parking lot, where a concerned citizen came across a young puppy confined in a small cage.

Without hesitation, the man contacted New Bern Animal Control, and officers were dispatched immediately. When they arrived at the scene, what they found shocked them.

“To leave an animal like that on the side of the road, especially in the summer heat… There was no water, just a bag of food,” New Bern Animal Control Officer Kevin Bahr shared with WITN. “It’s not the right thing to do.”

The most disturbing part of the discovery, however, was the note left inside the cage. “Please take me… I’m a 12 week hound. I don’t bite. Take great care of him. He has food with him.’ The rescuers posted the pup’s photo and note on their Facebook page.

While the words in the message suggested good intentions, officers struggled to understand how someone could abandon such a young puppy on the street, especially under such harsh conditions. Many locals were equally disturbed.

“I can’t imagine why anyone would just abandon a puppy… especially in a cage,” said Matthew Nelson, a New Bern resident. “We have services for unwanted animals. It’s reckless… I hope they find who did this.”

Despite the circumstances, officers quickly took steps to ensure the puppy’s safety. They transferred him to Craven-Pamlico Animal Services, where he will remain until a permanent family adopts him. Shortly after rescuing the pup, the Craven County Sheriff’s Office – Animal Protective Services posted an update on Facebook.

In their announcement, officers reminded the public that abandoning an animal is illegal. “It is important to note that under NCGS 14-361.1, abandoning an animal is illegal and can result in fines of up to $1,000,” they warned. The post sparked strong reactions on social media, with many users expressing their frustration.

“People never fail to disappoint!!” one person commented. Another wrote, “I don’t know how people who abandon animals like that can sleep at night. I have 5, and they’re family to me!” A third commenter shared their sadness: “What a cute dog! Poor guy .”

While this little pup’s journey started with abandonment, his story is far from over. Thanks to compassionate individuals, he is now safe and sound in the county shelter. Adopters have already shown interest, and we have no doubt that this sweet puppy will find his permanent home quickly.

Shockingly, this is not the first time she has faced animal cruelty charges; she has a past conviction for similar crimes. We must ensure that no more animals suffer or die in her care!

The officers concluded their message with a powerful reminder to other pet owners considering similar actions.“While we understand that everyone’s circumstances are different, leaving a dog where anyone could take him shows a lack of concern for his well-being,” the post read. “There is no excuse or tolerance for this behavior in Craven County.”
