In 2019, Jason Gasparik was driving home one Friday night when he came across an unexpected and heart-wrenching scene that would change his weekend plans entirely. On a bustling road in Charlotte, North Carolina, he noticed a vehicle stopped along the roadside, and its driver was running through the grass median in apparent distress. Moments later, his attention shifted to a chocolate Labrador, frantically darting in circles on the roadway. The dog’s panicked and disoriented movements made it clear that she was lost, confused, and in immediate danger of being struck by passing cars. Compelled to act, Gasparik pulled over to help.

“I saw the dog running in circles, confused and scared,” Gasparik shared with The Dodo. The dog, a 70-pound chocolate Lab named Roxy, was proving to be a tough rescue. Even the promise of treats wasn’t enough to coax her out of her panic.

After an hour of unsuccessful attempts, Gasparik realized the dog’s frantic movements might also be playful. He devised a clever plan. “I noticed she’d chase me if I jogged lightly,” he explained. By jogging laps around a nearby parking lot, he eventually tired her out. When she finally lay down, he was able to grab her safely by her neck scruff.

Once Roxy was safe, Gasparik took her to a 24-hour veterinary clinic to check for a microchip. Although the chip was present, it wasn’t registered to an owner. Realizing the challenge ahead, Gasparik decided to bring her home and began searching for her rightful family.

Even amidst preparations for an upcoming business trip, Gasparik prioritized finding Roxy’s owner. He turned to social media, sharing her story and photos across platforms. He also utilized PawBoost, a tool designed to circulate lost pet information to local Lost & Found Facebook groups.

Despite her confusion, Roxy’s friendly nature shone through. “The first night at my house, she jumped on my bed, landed on top of me, and started licking my face,” Gasparik said. “She was scared and confused, but also thrilled to have company.”

When online efforts didn’t yield immediate results, Gasparik decided to take a bold step. He crafted a sign using an old moving box and a tiki torch pole, then stationed himself at the intersection where he had found Roxy.

Holding the sign, he waved at passing cars, hoping to catch the attention of someone who recognized the dog. “I felt pretty foolish at first,” Gasparik admitted. “I worried people would think I was running some kind of scam.”

Undeterred, he spent hours on the corner, with Roxy faithfully by his side. While Saturday didn’t bring any leads, Gasparik’s determination didn’t waver. On Sunday, he returned to the same spot, and that’s when things took a turn.

Local photographer Eben Adrian snapped a photo of Gasparik holding his sign and posted it online. The image quickly went viral, drawing widespread attention to his mission. Messages began flooding in, including offers of assistance—and even a few romantic overtures for the dedicated dog rescuer.

Then, a breakthrough came via the Nextdoor app. Around 12:30 PM on Sunday, Gasparik received a message from a woman who had spotted Roxy’s owner several miles away. The man, who had mobility challenges, was driving through neighborhoods calling her name from his car.

The woman facilitated the reunion, and Gasparik met Roxy’s owner shortly afterward. The connection was immediate. “As soon as Roxy saw him, her ears perked up, and she ran straight to him,” Gasparik recalled. The owner confirmed his identity with paperwork and photos of Roxy stored on his phone.

Reflecting on the experience, Gasparik emphasized the importance of registering pet microchips. “If the chip had been registered, I could have reunited Roxy with her owner in just two hours,” he said.

Although the ordeal was exhausting, Gasparik said it was worth every moment. He plans to stay in touch with Roxy and her owner and even hopes to take her on walks in the future.

Gasparik’s story is a powerful reminder of the lengths kindness and perseverance can go to reunite a lost pet with their family.
