The decision to euthanize a pet with medical challenges can be incredibly complex, with many people holding different perspectives on what is humane. For one puppy, this difficult situation turned into a story of hope and compassion, thanks to the quick decision of a caring veterinarian. Dr. Oliver Reeve, a veterinarian from New Zealand, encountered a 7-week-old puppy brought to his clinic to be put down. The pup was born with birth defects, and the owner believed euthanasia was the most appropriate choice.
But instead of proceeding with the request, Reeve saw a different path for the little dog—one full of love and possibility. “A 7-week-old puppy got brought into the clinic to be euthanized tonight. Very sad. Anyway, meet my new son,” Reeve shared on Twitter. In a moment of compassion, he adopted the puppy himself, determined to give the little one the care and support he needed.
The decision quickly sparked conversations online, with people applauding Reeve for saving the puppy. Many were angry with the original owner for choosing euthanasia instead of trying to provide treatment. One person wrote, “Anyone that would even consider bringing a healthy pet to the vets to be put down is an utter scumbag that should face charges. It makes me rage.” Another added, “How anyone could do that to such a beautiful dog makes me despair.”
However, Reeve urged people to consider the complexity of the situation and show understanding. “I’m not going to talk about what defects they are. People are likely going to be a bit judgemental about him being surrendered for the issue,” Reeve explained. “The main thing is that the original owner sought veterinary care and didn’t let the puppy suffer.”
He went on to highlight an important perspective: “People shouldn’t be shamed for seeking veterinary care and electing euthanasia or surrender. Vets are not the police and we don’t want people reluctant to see us because they fear judgement,” Reeve said. He emphasized that euthanasia, while difficult, can sometimes be a humane option when done under professional care, especially when owners face limitations in providing the extensive treatment their pet might require.
Reeve named his new pup “Toby” and shared updates about his progress. Toby has already undergone his first surgery to address some of his birth defects, with another procedure scheduled in the coming months. Reeve is optimistic about his recovery, saying the little dog will be “all good” once treatment is complete.
In the meantime, Toby is thriving under the care of his new dad. He has gone from facing an uncertain future to being surrounded by love and medical support, proving how life can take a beautiful turn when someone steps up to help.

Toby has been into the clinic today for the first surgery to correct his birth defects. He’ll need another surgery in a few months and then he (should) be all good! He did well today. Brave little man. pic.twitter.com/HIEhI8mnha
