In a world where countless shelter dogs wait for a chance at a loving home, Wesley Swainston, a devoted U.S. Marine and passionate volunteer dog trainer, is making a remarkable difference. Through his inspiring mission, Wesley is taking unwanted shelter dogs for runs around town, giving them much-needed exercise while increasing their chances of adoption. His viral TikTok account, Forthedogs, has captured the hearts of millions by showcasing the positive impact that regular exercise and one-on-one attention can have on these deserving animals, offering them hope for a brighter future.

In March, Wesley had a simple yet powerful idea: what if taking shelter dogs for a run could help them get adopted? To test his theory, he recorded a video of himself running with each dog from his local shelter, giving them a much-needed break from their kennels and highlighting their personalities to potential adopters.

The response was overwhelming. Within just five days, his video amassed over 2 million views, and animal lovers across the globe were captivated by Wesley’s genuine dedication and the joyful moments he shared with the dogs.

Wesley’s runs aren’t just about getting some extra exercise — they’re about giving these dogs a second chance at life. Many shelter dogs spend hours confined in kennels, which can lead to pent-up energy, stress, and anxiety. Wesley’s running sessions provide these dogs with a healthy outlet, improving their behavior and making them more appealing to potential adopters.

“I love running, and I volunteer at my shelter every day after work,” Wesley shared in an interview with Newsweek. “I’m an active duty USMC Officer. When I get out in a year, I will be a traveling trainer!”

Wesley’s passion for dogs and his dedication to service extend far beyond his role in the Marine Corps. As a volunteer dog trainer at Adoption First Jacksonville NC, Wesley focuses not just on training the dogs but also on educating potential adopters about the incredible potential each shelter dog holds.

“My mission as a volunteer trainer is not to ‘train’ the dog but to show people who their dog COULD be,” Wesley explained. “People don’t understand that a shelter employee’s job isn’t to exercise the dogs. That’s where volunteers come in. Dogs are meant to run and move — it truly makes a difference in their lives, and it makes it way easier for me to train them and work with them.”

As Wesley’s videos continue to gain traction online, they’re doing more than just going viral — they’re leading to real adoptions. In a heartwarming follow-up video, Wesley shared that two of the dogs he featured in his initial post had gone “on trial” with prospective families just one day after the video was posted.

“Why not get some miles in that also changes lives? It’s a blast!” Wesley said enthusiastically. “If my videos go viral, usually the dog doesn’t struggle with adoption!”

This kind of success highlights the power of social media to drive meaningful change and connect animals with loving families. For many of these dogs, a few minutes of running with Wesley can mean the difference between staying in a shelter and finding a forever home.

Wesley’s efforts extend beyond simply helping individual dogs. His story is inspiring others to get involved in their own communities. By showing the impact that one person can have, Wesley is encouraging volunteers across the country to spend time with shelter dogs, provide exercise, and help increase adoption rates.

“I’ve had so many people reach out and ask how they can get involved,” Wesley shared. “The truth is, anyone can make a difference. Shelters always need volunteers, and something as simple as taking a dog for a walk can change their life.”

His runs with shelter dogs aren’t just about fitness — they’re about giving hope to dogs who need it most and helping them find the love they deserve. Through his unwavering dedication, Wesley is proving that something as simple as a run can lead to a lifetime of happiness for a shelter dog.
