The first time those kennel doors slowly opened, it marked a powerful turning point for hundreds of beagles who had spent their entire lives in confinement. More than 1,500 beagles have been rescued from Ridglan Farms, a research and testing facility in Dane County, Wisconsin. The large-scale operation came after growing scrutiny surrounding the facility’s practices. To avoid potential criminal charges, the owners agreed to release the majority of the dogs into the care of rescue organizations after already surrendering their state license the previous year.
The rescue marks one of the largest coordinated efforts of its kind. It is also the beginning of a completely new chapter for dogs who have spent their lives in controlled, clinical environments.
A Massive Effort to Bring Them Home
Big Dog Ranch Rescue is leading the operation, moving quickly to ensure the animals receive immediate care. On the first day alone, 300 beagles were safely removed from the facility.
Each dog is being carefully examined by a team of nine veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Health checkups are the first priority. Many of the dogs are timid and unsure, reacting to human touch with hesitation. Some have never been held in a comforting way before.
Microchips are also being implanted to ensure every dog can be identified and tracked as they begin their transition into new homes. It is a small step that carries big meaning. For the first time, these dogs are being treated as individuals with identities, not numbers in a system.
A Journey Across States and Into New Lives
The rescued beagles are now being transported across the country to give them the best chance at recovery and adoption. Some are heading to a central home base in Florida, where they will continue receiving care and socialization.
Others are being relocated to Alabama, New York, and several additional states. Rescue teams are working around the clock to coordinate safe travel, ensuring each dog is handled gently and given space to adjust.
A few hundred of the beagles will remain in Wisconsin. There, they will continue their recovery before becoming available for adoption through the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee later this month.
