Some dogs spend their entire lives knowing nothing but neglect, pain, and loneliness before finally getting a chance at comfort. Mickie, an elderly Yorkshire Terrier, was one of those dogs. After the backyard breeder he lived with was evicted from his home, Mickie was handed off to another woman who quickly realized the little dog needed far more medical care than she could provide on her own. Instead of allowing him to continue suffering quietly, she made the compassionate decision to bring him to rescue where he could finally receive the treatment, safety, and love he had been denied for so many years.

That decision may have saved his life.

Mickie arrived carrying the physical scars of years spent being overlooked. His small body showed the toll of neglect, but he still greeted people with a gentle wag of his tail. Despite everything he had endured, he remained trusting and affectionate.

Sadly, Mickie’s story is not unique.

K9 Kindness is currently caring for two female dogs from the same breeder. One is pregnant yet again. The other has mammary tumors and a large growth on her head. These dogs spent their lives producing puppies while receiving little care themselves.

Behind many “cheap designer puppies” sold online are stories exactly like this one.

Families often see adorable puppy photos posted online and believe they have found an affordable opportunity. The transactions happen quickly, usually in parking lots or public meeting places instead of inside homes where conditions could be seen. Buyers rarely meet the parent dogs or witness the environments they are living in.

Years later, rescue groups are left to pick up the pieces.

The mothers are exhausted and physically damaged. Senior dogs are discovered with untreated illnesses, painful infections, and years of suffering hidden beneath matted fur and wagging tails.

Mickie’s Pain Had Gone Untreated for Years

Anamosa Veterinary Clinic made room in their busy schedule to examine Mickie as soon as possible. Dr. Jake completed his exam, vaccines, and bloodwork while the team assessed the full extent of his condition.

One of Mickie’s most serious issues is his left eye.

The eye is painfully swollen, constantly weeping, and producing thick discharge. It has shrunk smaller than the other eye and no longer produces tears. Mickie has no vision in it at all. Based on its condition, it has likely been causing him discomfort for a very long time.

Next Thursday, Mickie will undergo surgery to remove the damaged eye and finally relieve the pain he has silently carried for years. During the procedure, he will also be neutered.

His recovery journey will not stop there.

Once he heals from surgery, Mickie will need extensive dental work. He only has six or seven teeth remaining, and most will likely need to be removed because of severe dental disease.

Even with everything ahead of him, Mickie’s future already looks brighter than his past.

For the first time in a long time, he is safe. He has a warm bed to sleep in, regular meals, and people surrounding him with compassion instead of neglect. The fear and pain he carried for years are finally being replaced with comfort and care.

It is heartbreaking to imagine how long Mickie lived in pain while still finding the strength to trust humans and wag his tail.

Tonight, though, his story is changing.
